The money laundering (original title: The Laundromat ) is a film satire in the American dramedy style by Steven Soderbergh , which celebrated its world premiere on September 1, 2019 in the competition at the Venice Film Festival . The film tells of the publication of the so-called Panama Papers and the associated mailbox companies, tax havens and methods of money laundering. It was shown in selected cinemas in Germany from October 3, 2019 and was published on the Netflix streaming portal on October 18, 2019 .

action

When a group of journalists fell into the hands of 11.5 million files, they connected the richest and most powerful personalities in the world to secret bank accounts and exposed them as tax evaders.

The Panama Papers

The film tells a true story. In 2015, an anonymous whistleblower with the code name "John Doe" approached the journalist Bastian Obermayer from the Süddeutsche Zeitung with 11.5 million documents , including e-mails, letters, faxes, certificates of incorporation, loan agreements, invoices and bank statements as PDF - , Text and image files from 1977 to 2016. These documents, later known as the Panama Papers , proved that several public figures had offshore bank accounts that helped them avoid high tax payments. After more than a year of analysis, the newspaper published first excerpts from the documents in April 2016, which were distributed simultaneously by 109 newspapers, television stations and online media in 76 countries. They documented legal strategies of tax avoidance , but also tax and money laundering offenses , breaches of UN sanctions and other criminal offenses by Mossack Fonseca's customers. In numerous countries, the revelations had led to investigations against politicians and other celebrities and sparked public debates about tax loopholes, letterbox companies , tax havens , tax crimes and tax morality.

The film is also based on the non-fiction book Secrecy World by Jake Bernstein , which the American journalist published in 2017. Secrecy World was also the working title of the film.

production

Directed by Steven Soderbergh , who had secured the rights to Bernstein's book. In October 2018 it was announced that Netflix would be financing the film.

Meryl Streep took on the female lead from Ellen Martin

In spring 2018, the line-up with Meryl Streep became known. She took over the female lead from Ellen Martin. She also plays Elena in the film, which is camouflaged by clever disguise. The two founders of the law firm Mossack Fonseca, German-born Jürgen Mossack and his Panamanian partner Ramón Fonseca , are played by Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas in the film. They act as narrators and presenters of the film, who, both wearing stylish suits, introduce the scenes and explain the history of bartering, money, credit and, ultimately, the concept of the concealment of assets that they developed in a very blunt manner. In their function, they help the viewer to process the information that is needed to understand the topic dealt with in the film.

In October 2018, David Schwimmer was cast for the role of Matthew Quirk . In the same month, the cast of other roles with Matthias Schoenaerts , Jeffrey Wright , Chris Parnell , James Cromwell , Melissa Rauch , Larry Wilmore and Robert Patrick became known. Nikki Amuka-Bird and Rosalind Chao can also be seen in other roles .

The shooting took place in the fall of 2018 in Miami and Key West in Florida, in Las Vegas, in Santa Clarita, California, at Lake Arrowhead and in Los Angeles. The director also acted as cameraman (under the pseudonym Peter Andrews, his father's first name) and did the editing (under the pseudonym Mary Ann Bernard, his mother's name).

The film music was composed by David Holmes .

On September 1, 2019, the film premiered in the main competition at the Venice Film Festival, where it competed for the Golden Lion . After a few more festival participation ( Toronto International Film Festival , Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastián , Zurich Film Festival ) and a limited theatrical release in the US on 27 September 2019 film October 18, 2019 the streaming portal was Netflix , the movie also co-produced, published internationally. The Filmwelt rental agency brought it to a few selected cinemas in Germany from October 3, 2019, two weeks before the launch on Netflix.
