Logan Lucky is a robbery comedy directed by Steven Soderbergh that released in US theaters on August 18, 2017.

action

Clyde and Jimmy Logan are brothers and are unlucky. Clyde believes that they have a family curse on them. Jimmy was an American football star in West Virginia high school and was on a scholarship to a prestigious university. But now he is struggling with the consequences of a knee injury that abruptly ended his promising football career. Because of this, he also loses his job as a construction worker. Jimmy's private life is portrayed in several subplots: He lives separated from his ex-wife Bobbie Jo; she is now in a relationship with the car dealer Moody Chapman. Jimmy has a daughter with Bobbie Jo, Sadie, with whom he has a very good relationship and who wants to compete in a children's beauty pageant. However, Bobbie Jo wants to move away with her husband, which will make it difficult for Jimmy to see his daughter. Clyde lost his left forearm in the Iraq war and as a one-armed bartender is only scorned and ridiculed.

As a result, the two rather burned-down brothers want to shoot a big thing in North Carolina with their sister Mellie : Jimmy knows that the vault in which the daily income of the Charlotte Motor Speedway ends up is not as secure as usual due to underground repair work. But first they have to free the safe cracker and explosives expert Joe Bang from prison. To convince Joe, who actually doesn't want to leave the prison, to join in the matter, Jimmy reveals to him that Joe's ex-girlfriend is spending the money he has stolen. The Logans also have to persuade the two sane brothers Joe Bangs to take part. Then Clyde deliberately drives a car into the office of a gas station, is sentenced to 90 days in prison, and meets Joe Bang there to help him break out.

Since the construction work on the racetrack is progressing faster than planned, the action has to be brought forward by a week and now falls on the Coca-Cola 600 , a famous and extremely well-attended NASCAR race. On the day of the coup, Joe and Clyde escape from prison in specially built boxes that they have placed underneath the prisoner trucks and are picked up by Mellie. The Bang brothers shut down the racetrack's internet connection with an explosive cocktail from their brother, after which all payments have to be made in cash. The proceeds are brought from all sales points to the central vault by pneumatic tube . Joe uses an improvised explosive device to damage the pneumatic tube system to allow the money to be stolen. Jimmy and his colleagues in the tunnel vacuum the banknotes with a huge vacuum cleaner and fill them in garbage bags. The Bang brothers drive some of the sacks outside in an electric cart. A second part - unnoticed by the two - is brought out of the race track building by garbage truck.

Due to the explosion, however, smoke spreads in the pneumatic tube system, which is noticed by the security team. Two security guards get to the bottom of the matter and almost uncover the robbery, but are repeatedly distracted by the gang, sometimes by accident. While the action is still running, Joe and Clyde make their way back to jail. They are discovered by Max Chilblain, a businessman and racing team owner, and his driver Dayton White. Chilblain recognizes Clyde - in the bar he works in, there was a fight between Jimmy and Chilblain because of derogatory jokes by the beverage entrepreneur about the physical impairments of the Logan brothers. This encounter also ends with a fight. Ultimately, Joe and Clyde escape and sneak back to prison disguised as firefighters. Her fellow prisoners had triggered a fire alarm in the prison's dining room and thus triggered a fire brigade. They had previously faked a prison riot to cover up Joe and Clyde's absence.

The FBI is investigating the robbery, led by Agent Sarah Grayson. However, Joe and Clyde have the perfect alibi due to their supposed jail time. A little later the "official" part of the loot is found in a stolen truck. It turns out, however, that the operator of the racetrack did not even know the amount of the loot and that more was actually stolen than expected. After the FBI has closed the investigation, Jimmy can give those involved their share of the unreturned portion of the loot. One morning Joe Bang finds a shovel on his porch, which he understands as an invitation to dig under the oak tree in his garden, where he used to hide his stolen money. The garbage truck driver and the organizer of the fire in the prison also share in the booty.

Meanwhile, Sadie wins the competition with the song Take Me Home, Country Roads . She chose this song especially because it was her father's favorite song. By chance, Jimmy also meets his former school friend Sylvia Harrison, with whom he ends up having a relationship.

The film ends with an open ending: the last scene takes place in Clyde's pub, where the Logan siblings, Joe and Sylvia Harrison toast the successful heist. On the other side of the bar, Grayson is watching the gang - apparently they haven't given up on the case yet.

production

Staff, cast and dubbing

Directed by Steven Soderbergh , who also acted as cameraman and film editor. Rebecca Blunt is given as the scriptwriter , although those in the film business assume a pseudonym for this information . Soderbergh himself describes the film as a kind of complete reversal of the principle of his Ocean's Eleven films , but feels this as positive: “Nobody dresses up in style. Nobody has cool gadgets. You do not have any money. They have no technology. ”This is exactly what fascinated him about the film project, says Soderbergh. The film was funded entirely outside of the Hollywood system. The money for the shooting and the marketing came from the advance sale of the international distribution rights as well as all rights for the home entertainment market. The score was composed by David Holmes . The soundtrack to the film includes 16 pieces of music and was released on August 18, 2017 by Milan Records.

Adam Driver played Clyde Logan in the film, while Channing Tatum played his brother Jimmy Logan. Riley Keough got the role of Mellie Logan and Daniel Craig plays Joe Bang. Katie Holmes plays Bobbie Jo Logan Chapman and Seth MacFarlane plays Max Chilblain. A number of racers have in the movie cameo appearances , as Kyle Busch , Kyle Larson and the retired Carl Edwards . The drivers Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano can be seen in the roles of two security officers who feel like police officers. NASCAR driver and young actor Ryan Blaney took on the role of delivery boy.

The German synchronization was based on a dialog book by Timmo Niesner and directed by Christoph Cierpka on behalf of RC Production Kunze & Wunder GmbH & Co. KG in Berlin . Daniel Fehlow lends his voice to Jimmy Logan, Robert Glatzeder to his brother Clyde and Joanna Kitzl to her sister Mellie. Joe Bang is voiced by Dietmar Wunder in the German dubbing and his brother Sam by Jesco Wirthgen .

In addition to filming at Charlotte Motor Speedway, there were also recordings at Atlanta Motor Speedway .

The set was created by Howard Cummings , for the Duck Tape Bar where Clyde Logan works.

reception

Age rating

In the US, the film was rated PG-13 by the MPAA . In Germany the film is FSK 12 . The reason for the release states: “The episodic film comes up with typical genre elements of gangster comedy, a lot of situation comedy up to slapstick and overdrawn characters. Primary school children can indeed irritate individual violent scenes and the crude language again and again, but from the age of 12 they are able to decipher these elements as comedically excessive based on their media experience and to place them in the overall context. "

Reviews

The film has so far won over 91 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics .

Many German-language press releases recall earlier successful crook comedies by the director and the simple origin of the protagonists from the southern states in this film is emphasized in comparison . Daniel Craig, known from the James Bond films as a stylish secret agent, is particularly convincing in his role as a redneck crook. Dirk Peitz writes in the time of a "Southern version of the Ocean's films" and Nina Jerzy speaks in the NZZ from "sweaty working class counterpart of Ocean's Eleven ." Hannah Pilarczyk in Spiegel rates the “discount version of the Oceans million coups” as “probably the best entertainment this autumn cinema”.

In the film service, Katrin Häger refers to the local color and is particularly enthusiastic about the slowness and relaxation that the film conveys.

David Ehrlich (indieWire) says Steven Soderbergh is returning from retirement with a silly heist film that truly has soul.

Sascha Westphal writes in epd Film , from the contrast between the inadequacies of his characters and the perfection with which he staged their daring raid, which also includes an extremely innovative prison break, Soderbergh not only cast comedic sparks: “He also ignites a real firework of visual gags and ambiguous dialogues. The comedic lightness that characterized the Oceans series and parts of Magic Mike is much more than just a stylistic peculiarity here. It is the decisive prerequisite for an experiment in film politics. "

Christian Berndt explained to Deutschlandradio that because the brothers in the film used the weaknesses of a dysfunctional social system that made such a robbery seem almost logical, Soderbergh was able to tell a very contemporary Robin Hood story with a final point that made the film utopian Give character.

Jerzy is a little more critical in her NZZ review, which on the one hand refers to the special form of funding by the independent director and praises the joy of playing of those involved, but feels the humor partly on the border with the "hillbilly parody" and that too Ende believes that the dramaturgy is too clever . Andreas Kilb from the FAZ saw this hillbilly world years ago in films by the Coen brothers and therefore does not find Sonderbergh's contribution particularly original.

Gross profit

In the USA, the film opened in cinemas on August 17, 2017, landed at number 3 in the box office in the first week and was the second highest newcomer after Killer's Bodyguard . In total, “Logan Lucky” stayed in the top 10 of the US box office for four weeks and grossed around 27.7 million US dollars in the US.

The worldwide revenue of the film to date amounts to 48.5 million US dollars (approx. 43.5 million euros) with a production budget of 29 million US dollars (approx. 26 million euros).

The cinema release in Germany was on September 15, 2017. Here it landed behind High Society and Mother! as the third-best newcomer at number 5 in the charts, stayed in the top 10 for another week and has recorded a total of 203,711 visitors so far, which corresponds to an income of approximately 1.9 million US dollars.

The film was "financially a flop," said Steven Soderbergh in an interview with Christian Aust. It was "obviously a wrong decision" to forego classic TV advertising for the film.
