High Flying Bird is an iPhone 8 drama film directed by Steven Soderbergh about a sports agent who searches for a business opportunity during a professional basketball lockout and teaches a young gamer the tricks and pitfalls of the business side of his sport. The film premiered on January 27, 2019 at the Slamdance Film Festival and was released internationally on Netflix on February 8, 2019 .

action

The American professional basketball league NBA is on strike, which is why player agent Ray Burke is slowly getting real money problems. He is known for signing young, aspiring players and helping them with their first steps in the NBA. The rookie Erick Scott, who is under contract with his company, who also has a financial bottleneck, gets into an argument with his future teammate Jamero Umber, which they take out online. The Twitter battle between the two gives Ray an idea. A new basketball league, which could act independently of the mostly white owners of the teams and in which the games are shown on the Internet, could be the solution to their financial problems. This would also circumvent contractual obligations. Ray senses that he can make a lot of money with the business model, but he only has 72 hours to implement the daring plan.

production

The main role of Ray Burke was cast with André Holland .

Soderbergh himself acted as a cameraman and also did the film editing. Filming began in New York in February 2018 and ended in mid-March 2018, taking just three weeks. After recording Unsane - Delivered on a smartphone a year earlier , Soderbergh shot the film with an iPhone 8 .

The film premiered on January 27, 2019 as part of the Slamdance Film Festival, was screened at the Film Society of Lincoln Center on February 7, 2019, and was included on Netflix worldwide on February 8, 2019 .

The film has so far received the approval of 93 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics and achieved an average rating of 7.4 out of a possible 10 points.

Robert Abele of The Wrap describes High Flying Bird as a thought-provoking movie about what the tempting possibilities are in a sport that is so important to its predominantly black athletes, but which is still largely dominated by a wealthy, white class. that resists change or power-sharing.

Michael Meyns writes in his review of film releases that Tarell Alvin McCraney's script is so dense, so full of text and sub-texts that it is hardly possible to perceive all the details at first sight. Even if it is not always possible to understand exactly what the players' agents, managers and team owners are arguing about, the basic tendency is unmistakable, says Meyns: "Some are in control, others are kept on a short leash. That some know and the others are black, there is no need to mention it in great detail, it cannot be overlooked. " McCraney and Soderbergh just let the race issue resonate subliminally, which makes their analysis of the structures of American sport and thus also of American society even more convincing, said Meyns. As with his thriller Unsane - Delivered passe in High Flying Bird aesthetics perfectly to the film by diving offices and luxury restaurants in terrific clear, consistently cold-feeling images. The film critic summarizes Soderbergh's work: "He tells of the structures of professional basketball with enormous intensity and thus also of the deeply rooted racial relations in the USA."
