action

Housewife Penny Chenery faces a difficult decision after her mother's sudden death. Her parents owned a horse breeding business that her sick father cannot continue alone. Her husband assumes that she will sell the farm and give her father to a nursing home. But on the day of the funeral, Penny doubts whether she should take this easy route. There are too many memories here in the place where she grew up. In addition, two valuable broodmares are expecting their promising offspring. She really wants to see one of these foals grow up and train. But she has to find out that the horse trainer is not loyal. Without further ado, she quits the man and tries to find a new trainer. With a lot of persuasion she succeeds in this project, and under Lucien Laurin's upbringing “Big Red” grows into a young stallion.

Penny commutes back and forth between her family's home and the farm all the time. Her four teenage children get along quite well without their mother, and her husband inevitably tolerates his wife's new “hobby”. Only the coach gives Penny little hope for a special talent from "Big Red". In his opinion, he eats way too much and has little ambition to ever run a race. Nevertheless, he registers the animal in a race for two-year-olds, and almost as feared, this ends in a disaster and last place. The trainer only gives Penny hope when she finds a suitable jockey for the stallion - one who knows how to handle “Big Red” properly and who challenges him properly. At the next horse race in Saratoga, the stallion will start under the name Secretariat because this name was given to him by the top race management. The change of jockey is indeed successful, and "Big Red" wins its first race. From now on he cannot be stopped and gallops from victory to victory. With seven wins in four months, he is even named horse of the year . The next challenge is the Triple Crown race . But before that happens, Penny's father dies too, and inheritance tax becomes a problem. Her brother Jack wants to give up as a co-heir and sell everything, but Penny is reluctant. She believes she can find the $ 6 million she needs. If necessary, she has to sell some of the mares, but she doesn't want to give up “Big Red”. So she comes up with selling breeding parts. For this plan, she finds an ally in the son of a good family friend. Together they tackle this daring undertaking. The coach is also doing his best, and so Secretariat can start for the Wood Memorial, the last one before the Triple Crown races. Contrary to expectations, he only comes in third, and jockey Ronny says that something is wrong with the horse. Since “Big Red” eats noticeably less, the vet looks at the horse and finds an abscess in its mouth. With this removed, Penny is optimistic about the upcoming Kentucky Derby . The race starts full of excitement, and although it doesn't look like it at first, Secretariat wins by a long way. Just a fortnight later, he also won the next race with ease. Not only Penny is thrilled - her family is now finally proud of her mother. Only coach Lucien is cautious. He fears that they could overwhelm “Big Red” because the last of the Triple Crown races is also the longest and most strenuous. He'd rather give the horse a break, but Penny is sure Secretariat will make it.

Before the last Triple Crown race everyone is very excited and sometimes nervous. Spectators and journalists are just as excited as the horse owners. Secretariat is not only everyone's favorite, it's everyone's favorite. There are only five horses at the start in this difficult race, and this time “Big Red” takes the lead and won't give up this position anymore. He leaves all competitors far behind and wins with a lead of 31 lengths.

In all the years since Secretariat won the Triple Crown, it hasn't even come close to winning time or being ahead of the Belmont Stakes . After this he won four more races and then came to the Hancocks Clairborne Farm in Kentucky as a breeding stallion, where he sired more than 600 foals. Alongside Man o 'War, Secretariat is considered the best racehorse of the 20th century.

Penny had shown everyone that it is worth believing in something and not giving up. With the success of Secretariat, she saves her family and her farm.

Emergence

The film is largely based on the book Secretariat: The Making of a Champion by William Nack. He was involved in the production of the film in an advisory capacity. Several horses served as actors for Secretariat. Most important of all was Trolley's Boy, a descendant of Secretariat, and Longshot Max, who was descended from Secretariat's father Bold Ruler.

Secretariat was released on DVD and Blu-ray by Walt Disney in January 2011 .

criticism

The lexicon of international film wrote that it was a "convincingly played, exquisitely photographed family entertainment that comedically and soulfully plays through the American dream of the success of the able, admittedly only touching on some central problems".
