Nelsan Ellis (born November 30, 1977 in Harvey , Illinois - † July 8, 2017 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor .

Life

Nelsan Ellis was born in Harvey, Illinois. After his parents divorced, he moved to Alabama with his mother . He returned to Illinois in his youth and graduated from Thornridge High School in Dolton in 1997 . He then attended the Juilliard School in New York City . While at Julliard, he wrote a play called Ugly , which was also performed there and for which he received Lincoln Center's Martin E. Segal Award .

His first film role was in the short film Lost in 2002 . In 2005 he played in the film Warm Springs alongside Kenneth Branagh and Kathy Bates . This was followed by guest appearances in Without a Trace and Veronica Mars and other small film roles. His breakthrough came with the television series True Blood , for which he received a Satellite Award for best supporting actor in 2008 and in which he could be seen until the end of 2014. From 2016 to 2017 he had a recurring supporting role in Elementary .

Nelsan Ellis died of heart failure in July 2017 .
