A Perfect Day (German about A Perfect Day ) is a Spanish tragicomedy from the year 2015 . It was based on the novel Dejarse Llover by the Spanish writer Paula Farias. Fernando León de Aranoa was responsible for the script, direction and production .

action

Towards the end of the Yugoslav wars , a team from the aid organization Aid Across Borders was deployed in the war zone. The team consists of the experienced and clarified crisis helpers Mambrú and B, the idealistic Sophie, who has just joined the team, and the translator Damir. The current task of the four is to recover a corpse from a village well, as the decomposition process would poison the well water and the only two other water sources in the area are mined. When recovering the corpse, the rope used for this breaks and the team tries to find a replacement - a supposedly easy task, but one that keeps the team busy for 24 hours. The group searches for several suitable ropes, but is refused by their owners because they need the ropes for the war. Meanwhile, two other people join the team: Mambrú saves the boy Nikola from an armed gang of young people and Mambrú's former lover Katya is supposed to evaluate the work of the team for the UN . After the group, which has grown to six people, can finally find a rope, UN soldiers prevent the body from being recovered with reference to bureaucratic regulations. Mambrú's team reluctantly complies and goes to another mission, while the sudden onset of heavy rain causes the level of the well to rise sharply, so that the villagers can retrieve the corpse without a rope.

History of origin

The author of the novel, Paula Farias, worked for the Spanish section of Doctors Without Borders in the Kosovo war at the turn of the millennium . From 2006 to 2011 she was director of the organization. In 2008 she met the director Fernando León de Aranoa, with whom she has been friends since then. Dejarse Llover is Farias' first novel. This remains unspecific with regard to the location of the action and only mentions “the Balkans”, the film, on the other hand, fixes itself on the Bosnian War by naming different religions as one of the mainsprings for the war and by naming the year 1995 .

The film was shot in Andalusia and Castilla-La Mancha . For the soundtrack, Arnau Bataller preferred older, rocky pieces by z. B. The Velvet Underground , Marilyn Manson , Gogol Bordello , the Ramones or the Buzzcocks . A Perfect Day had its premiere on May 16, 2015 as part of the Quinzaine des réalisateurs in Cannes . The regular theatrical release was on August 26, 2015 in Spain; in Germany the film opened on October 22, 2015 and was shown at the Hamburg Film Festival , among others .

criticism

A Perfect Day received mostly positive reviews. The Rotten Tomatoes review database aggregates 52 reviews to a rating of 73%. Asokan Nirmalarajah praised Filmstarts.de for “successful moments” and “actors who let class through”, but criticized a “sluggish script”, stereotypical characters and their relationships to one another and “rough jumps” between different film genres that A Perfect Day unites in itself, and awarded three out of five possible stars. Justin Chang praised the cynicism of the film, the realistic portrayal of the war scenario and the inhabitants of the region and the work of the main actors for the Variety , but criticized the "sluggish [script]" and the stereotyped relationships between the characters and judged that the film was never as “fresh, funny or smart as he sees himself”. Henry Barnes praised the dialogues between Mambrú and B for the British Guardian , but criticized a general indecision of the film, both in the balancing act between comedy and tragedy and in the elaboration of subplots, as well as the "crass" soundtrack. He awarded three stars out of five. Numerous reviewers drew parallels with Robert Altman's war comedy MASH , but León de Aranoa did not achieve its qualities.
