The Lucky Ones is an American comedy film from the year 2008 . Directed by Neil Burger , who also co-produced the film and wrote the script together with Dirk Wittenborn .

Soldiers Colee, Cheever and TK return from the Iraq war . They meet in Germany, from where they fly to New York City on the same plane . There the connecting flights will be canceled.

The soldiers travel together across the United States to bring back the guitar for the family of Colee's fallen friend - who saved her life . TK did not get an erection after being shot in his penis and wants a prostitute to cure this problem before he goes to his fiancée. Cheever wants to go home to his wife and lead a normal life with her and their son. But it turns out differently than all three think.

The film was shot in Denver , Las Vegas , St. Louis and various locations in Illinois from May to June 2007 , among others . Its production amounted to an estimated 15 million US dollars . The world premiere took place on March 10, 2008 at the ShoWest festival. On September 10, 2008, the film was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival . It opened in cinemas in the United States and Canada on September 26, 2008.

Reviews

The organizers of the Toronto International Film Festival decided that the film started like a road movie , but that it tells a moving story of the three Americans who had returned home and disoriented. Each scene draws the characters more precisely. The performances of the main actors are "outstanding" ("standout").

The lexicon of international films describes the film as an "[a] excellently played mixture of tragic comedy and road movie, which treats a national trauma with subtle humor".
