Zathura - A Space Adventure is a science fiction - adventure film from the year 2005 by director Jon Favreau . The film is based on the children's novel of the same name by Chris Van Allsburg . The working title of the film was Jumanji 2 . The film opened in German cinemas on February 2, 2006.

Six-year-old Danny and his ten-year-old brother Walter quarrel and make life difficult for each other. They spend the weekend at their father's house, who, however, has to go to an urgent appointment. Then Danny discovers an old board game in the dusty basement. The mechanically windable sheet metal construction moves two small spaceships on predetermined paths through space and issues cards with event reports and instructions to the two players. The game seems to come from the 1950s in its old style (for example in the style of Flash Gordon ), is reminiscent of similar real wind-up games (for example with small tin cars) from that time and bears the name Zathura .

It is an enchanted game, because the first card, according to its labeling, triggers a meteor shower that devastates the house. When the house is suddenly in space , the brothers understand the gravity of the situation. Only when they finish the game will the nightmare end. But every move triggers another exciting and dangerous event. For example, the brothers unintentionally put their older sister Lisa into a cryonic freeze , are chased by a murderous robot , have to rescue a stranded astronaut (who later turns out to be the adult Walter) and fight against the extraterrestrial lizard creatures called Zorgon and their attacking spaceships. In the end they succeed, now united in brotherhood, to successfully finish the game.
