Poisoned Truth (original title Dark Waters ; originally intended title Dry Run ) is a film by Todd Haynes that was released in US cinemas on November 22, 2019 and will be released in German cinemas on October 8, 2020. Anne Hathaway and Mark Ruffalo stars as Sarah and Robert Bilott in the pollution whistleblower drama . Dark Waters is the film adaptation of a report by Nathaniel Rich in the New York Times Magazine about the 19-year legal battle between Robert Bilott and DuPont .

action

Corporate attorney Robert Bilott, employed by Taft Stettinius & Hollister , is dragging chemical company DuPont into court for pollution from perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and other perfluorinated and polyfluorinated alkyl compounds after uncovering the link between a series of unexplained deaths in and around Parkersburg , West Virginia and the chemical company reveals.

The US film closes with the note that it is assumed that PFOA is in the blood of almost all living things and that more than 600 long-lived chemicals are still not subject to control or regulation. Furthermore, Robert Bilott is still in litigation with DuPont.

production

Directed by Todd Haynes . The film is based on an article by Nathaniel Rich in the New York Times Magazine entitled The Lawyer Who Became DuPont's Worst Nightmare , which was adapted for the film by Mario Correa . Matthew Michael Carnahan was initially entrusted with this work.

Filming began on January 14, 2019 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Edward Lachman acted as cameraman . Oscar winner Hannah Beachler was hired for the production design .

reception

The film has so far won over 90 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics and achieved a rating of 7.3 out of a possible 10 points.

In April 2020, the jury of Evangelical Film Work recommended Poisoned Truth as film of the month. The reasoning says that Todd Haynes shows what it demands of his protagonist to mess with an influential company that wants to prevent the truth from coming to light with all its might. The film conveys in-depth knowledge of an environmental scandal with worldwide effects, without teaching. The dark tones in which the cameraman Edward Lachman dipped the pictures reflected the cryptic atmosphere in which the lawyer’s courageous fight against the powerful chemical company takes place. In addition, the gripping film captivates with the outstanding acting performance of Mark Ruffalo .

The film grossed $ 11.7 million worldwide.
