Protestant Film Work Jury

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Protestant Film Work Jury is a committee that has been awarding an outstanding feature or documentary film as Film of the Month every month since 1951 and recommending it to a wider audience.

history

In 1951 the Evangelical Film Guild was brought into being as part of a conference of the "Chamber for Journalism of the EKD " . She saw it as her task “to awaken an understanding of the good film in broad sections of the Evangelical Church, to develop a sound judgment and to help raise the audience's taste”. Since November 1951, gives judges the Protestant Film Guild - since 1973 Jury of the Protestant film work - monthly movie recommendations out and provides "for a substantial movie review and evaluation".

Working method

The jury consists of eight members who are appointed every two years by institutions and associations of the Protestant church. The management of the jury is in the hands of the Film Culture Center in the joint venture of Protestant journalism . According to the jury, “films that serve the coexistence of people, contribute to the examination of one's own positions, to the perception of human responsibility and to the orientation towards the biblical message. It takes into account the film's aesthetic design, the ethical content and the thematic significance of the film. None of these aspects can alone be decisive; rather, they should be evaluated in their mutual relationship. "

With the “Film of the Month”, the jury directs its recommendations to cinema operators, film program organizers, those responsible for educational work as well as to an audience inside and outside the church interested in film. The "film of the month" is selected from the current offers of the film distributors for German cinemas.

Since it was founded, the Evangelical Film Jury has named over 700 films as “Film of the Month” and published extensive accompanying materials for media education work . A film database on the website makes the decisions of the jury accessible; Information sheets on individual films are available for download. A thematically oriented canon of film history has emerged over the decades .
