He revealed that the chemical company DuPont in Parkersburg dumped perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) into the Ohio River and disposed of sludge containing PFOA in an unsealed landfill , and received the Honorary Right Livelihood Award 2017, presented in Stockholm on December 1 .

In the early 1980s, the company purchased 66 acres of land from a farmer in Parkersburg , West Virginia, to use for landfill of his production waste. In 1998 Bilott received a call from Wilbur Tennant, a ranchers in Parkersburg. He claimed that many of his cattle were showing signs of serious illness and suspected that this could be due to the landfill. Bilott undertook to investigate the matter even though he had previously worked for DuPont.

Bilott found that the drinking water in the area was contaminated with perfluorooctanoic acid, which led to animal and cancer diseases . He argued that the 70,000 inhabitants had to undergo a toxicological study over a period of seven years. Wilbur Tennant, who set off the alarm, developed cancer and died of a heart attack in 2009 . Two years later, his wife died of cancer. After 19 years, DuPont assumed responsibility and was sentenced to pay the victims $ 671.7 million in damages.
