Djamchid Chemirani
Djamchid Chemirani (* 1942 in Tehran ) is a Zarb player from Iran .
Chemirani had Zarb lessons at a young age from the master Hossein Tehrani , who drove the development of the Zarb from an accompaniment to a solo instrument, and was soon recognized as his legitimate successor. He made appearances on radio and television and worked with musicians such as Dariush Talai and Majid Kiani .
In 1961 he settled in France and had numerous appearances at the Théâtre de la Ville . He introduced the Zarb to the theater (with Peter Brook ), ballet (with Maurice Béjart , Carolyn Carlson ), jazz and medieval music and taught, among others, the techniques of the instrument to Jean-Pierre Drouet and Bruno Caillat . His most important students, however, were his sons Bijan and Keyvan , with whom he appears as the Trio Chemirani and also worked with Omar Sosa , Sylvain Luc and Renaud Garcia-Fons .
As an interpreter in medieval music he played with René Clemencic and Henri Agnel and in world music with Reto Weber , Ross Daly and David Hykes . In 1978 he was a founding member of Reto Weber's Percussion Orchestra (together with the Ghanaian Nana Twum Nketia), which existed for more than 25 years and released several albums; the group toured worldwide, including with jazz musicians such as Albert Mangelsdorff , Chico Freeman and Franco Ambrosetti .
