Dariush Talai

Dariush Talai ( Dariush Tala'i * 1953 ) is an Iranian Tar - and Setar player, composer , musicologist and -pädagoge .

Talai studied targame with Ali Akbar Shahnazi for more than ten years . Only Ali Borumand introduced him to the tradition of radif and Youssef Forutan and Abdollah Davami taught him to play the setar and sing. He has mastered the traditional way of Tarspiels as well as modern interpretations and worked with musicians such as the French jazz clarinetist Michel Portal and the Indian sitar player Kushal Das together and worked on multimedia projects with the choreographer Maurice Bejart and Carolyn Carlson with. Several of his albums have been released by the Mahoor Institute of Culture and Art .

He published numerous texts on the aesthetics of classical Persian music, developed his own system for notating the music of the Radif tradition and worked as a university lecturer at the University of Tehran , the Sorbonne and the University of Washington in Seattle. He was honored with an Aga Khan Music Award in 2019 for his services as a musician, scientist and teacher .
