Gavin Lambert

Gavin Lambert (born July 23, 1924 in East Grinstead , Sussex , † July 17, 2005 in Los Angeles , California ) was a British-American writer , screenwriter and film critic .

Life

Lambert spent his school education at St. George's School and Cheltenham College . He then took a degree in English Literature at Magdalen College of the University of Oxford on. Here he met Lindsay Anderson , with whom he later wrote several scripts and also worked together in other contexts. After a year, Lambert dropped out of his studies. He initially worked as a writer for advertising films and published his first short stories.

In 1947 he was one of the founders of Sequence magazine, along with Lindsay Anderson and Karel Reisz . He later moved to Sight & Sound magazine, where he was editor-in-chief from 1949 to 1955. At the same time he wrote film reviews for the Sunday Times and the Guardian .

In 1954 he turned to screenwriting and the film Another Sky was made , for which he also worked for the first and only time as a director. He also moved to Hollywood in the late 1950s at the invitation of Nicholas Ray , who had seen his film . Up to and including 1991 he was involved in around 20 film and television productions as a screenwriter. There are also a number of unproduced scripts that can be found in his estate.

In 1959 he published his first book, The Slide Area: Scenes of Hollywood Life , a collection of short stories. Several fictional books followed in the 1960s and 1970s. Lambert incorporated his observations of the film industry and the life in Hollywood associated with it into his literary work. He later wrote several biographies on Hollywood personalities, including Norma Shearer (1990), Alla Nazimova (1997) and Natalie Wood (2002).

In 1964, Lambert was granted US citizenship.

From 1974 to 1989 he lived mainly in the Moroccan city of Tangier , after which he settled in Los Angeles . Lambert was openly gay and was in a relationship with Nicholas Ray and later with Mart Crowley , among others .

Awards (selection)

For the screenplay for Sons and Lovers , he and TEB Clarke were nominated for an Oscar in 1961 in the category Best Adapted Screenplay . His second Oscar nomination followed at the 1978 Academy Awards, this time with Lewis John Carlino for her work on I Never Promised You A Rose Garden .

The National Board of Review awarded Lambert the William K. Everson Film History Award in 1997 for his biography on Alla Nazimova .
