Paul Chihara

Paul Seiko Chihara (born July 9, 1938 in Seattle , Washington ) is an American composer and music professor at the University of California, Los Angeles .

Life

Since the native American Paul Seiko Chihara is of Japanese descent, he spent several years in the internment camp Minidoka War Relocation Center during the Second World War . He later received his bachelor's and master's degrees in English literature from the University of Washington and Cornell University . He then did his doctorate under Robert Palmer at Cornell. At the same time he studied composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris , with Ernst Pepping in West Berlin and Gunther Schuller in Tanglewood . He was the first employed composer of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra , together with the conductor Neville Marriner , and currently holds a leading position at the Music Institute of the University of California, Los Angeles.
