action

After suffering a bitter defeat on earth to the Greatest Wizard over 500 years ago and being banished to the astral plane, the Dark Master sees his chance in finally defeating the wizard. He has three days to kill the old magician before he can transfer his powers to a chosen one. To do this, he sends his servant Morgan LeFay to New York City , who tracks down the magician who lives there under the name Thomas Lindmer. The 700-year-old man himself knows that his time has come and sends his student Wong to meet Dr. Find Stephen Strange. Meanwhile he visits Morgan LeFay himself, but is attacked from behind by the hypnotized Clea Lake and thrown from a bridge.

When Clea wakes up from the hypnosis caused by LeFay, she is haunted by feelings of guilt that later plague her dreams. She escapes from her apartment, delusional that she is being followed by LeFay, has an accident on the street and is taken to the hospital for treatment by Dr. Strange delivered. Since he has shared the same dream with her before, he saves her from having to take medication to get back to sleep. Later he receives a visit from Lindmer, who survived the fall from the bridge, and learns that there is a special deep relationship between the two of them, which is why he was able to see Clea's dream. To find out more, he invites him over.

After Clea from the drugs that Dr. Taylor has given her, has fallen into a coma, Strange seeks out Lindmer. He explains to him that he will have to make a decision soon. He either pays a high price in order to understand and accept his true destiny, or he leads a normal life in complete naivety. However, he could only save Clea as a magician, which is why Dr. Strange agrees to be transferred to the astral plane. There he saves Clea and escapes the demon Bezerooth, who was sent by LeFay to stop him.

Back in New York, Clea thanks Dr. Strange, and they both get closer. Since LeFay failed to find Dr. To stop Strange and face cruel punishment for her failure, she also travels to New York and is able to sneak into Lindmer's estate. After being discovered by Wong, she switches him off, defeats Lindmer in a magic duel and kidnaps him into the astral plane. Then she travels to Dr. Strange and also kidnaps him to the astral plane. She offers him everything from wealth to power, if only he would accept his magic ring. Because Dr. But Strange refuses, she shows him her prisoner Lindmer, which also leads to a fight. For the first time, Dr. Strange his strength, defeats LeFay, saves Lindmer and successfully escapes to Lindmer's property. There he is informed by Lindmer that it was all just a trick. He was never in real danger and only allowed himself to be captured so that Dr. Strange realizes his fate as a magician, accepts and saves him. Since Dr. Strange has now understood what it is about, he accepts his fate, bows to the leadership of the light and surrenders to the transformation in which all of Lindmer's powers are transferred to him.

Some time later, Dr. Strange went back to his normal life and met with Clea regularly. Over the news he learns that Morgan LaFey is in the process of building a cult where she promises success in life for everyone as long as they only attend her seminars.

background

After a Marvel adaptation of the television series The Incredible Hulk on March 10, 1978 was already running on CBS , Dr. Strange will be the pilot for another television series. But because the film was "five days behind schedule and maybe 50 to 100,000 US dollars over budget" and it would have had "better ratings if it hadn't run in competition with Roots ", the series was never produced. In Germany, the film was released directly on VHS in March 1986 .

criticism

The lexicon of international film said: "Dramaturgically and trick-technically level fantasy film, intended as a pilot film for a television series."
