Peter Hooten (born November 29, 1950 in Clermont , Florida ) is an American actor .

Life

Hooten began his career in 1969 with a guest role in the doctor series Dr. med. Marcus Welby . In the early 1970s he had a number of other episode roles, including in The Waltons and Mannix . He made his feature film debut in 1975 in James Polakof's thriller Sunburst , in which he played the lead role. That same year, he starred opposite Andrew Robinson and Keenan Wynn in the drama A Woman for All Men . In 1977 he got the role of Paul in the animal horror film Orca - The Killer Whale . In addition to Richard Harris , Charlotte Rampling and Bo Derek , he was seen for the first and last time in a major Hollywood production .

In 1978, he starred in two productions, which was not very successful in their time, but by subsequent remakes won late interest from film fans. In Enzo G. Castellari's war film A Bunch of Daring Dogs , he played the murderer Tony alongside Bo Svenson and Fred Williamson . The original title of this film and several storylines inspired Quentin Tarantino for Inglourious Basterds , which was released in 2009 . In the same year, Hooten played the title role in the television film Dr. Strange . The fantasy film shot as a pilot for a television series to be developed , however, did not meet the expectations placed on him. The 2016 published Marvel - superhero movie Doctor Strange with Benedict Cumberbatch evolved, however, into a blockbuster. In later years, Hooten appeared in a number of Italian productions, including 2020 - Texas Gladiators by George Eastman and Joe D'Amato, and Umberto Lenzi's mercenary film Kommando Schwarzer Panther .

From 1983 until his death in 1995, Hooten was the life partner of the writer and Pulitzer Prize winner James Merrill .
