The decision - a true story (original title: The Rookie ; English for : The newcomer ) is an American drama from 2002 . Directed by John Lee Hancock and written by Mike Rich .

action

Jimmy Morris grew up the son of a Navy officer who moved frequently. He becomes a baseball player and then - after an injury - a chemistry teacher and coach of a high school team . As an adult, Morris blames his divorced father for his failures.

After losing a game, Morris tells students that attitudes towards gaming can shape their entire lives. It's not just about the game itself, but about making dreams come true. The players then agree with him that he will take part in trial training for talent scouts for the professionals if the team wins the regional championship. After the victory of his student team, Morris has to decide whether he should actually keep his promise. He decides to do it and throws some very fast balls. He was accepted into a professional baseball team as the oldest "rookie" (beginner) of the last 30 years and played as a "relief pitcher" (substitute pitcher) for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays .

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on March 29, 2002 that the film combines two "tried and tested" formulas: the one in which a small team wins and the one in which an older man can realize his dream. It was cobbled together from older films and shows that a "skilfully" made film does not have to be good ( "It is not good. It is skillful. (...)" The Rookie "demonstrates that a skillful movie need not be good. " ).

Awards

The film won the Heartland Film Festival's Truly Moving Sound Award in 2002 and the ESPY Award (for Best Sports Film ) . Angus T. Jones and the film for Best Drama were nominated for the Young Artist Award in 2003 . The film won the 2003 Las Vegas Film Critics Society Award and the Character and Morality in Entertainment Award and was nominated for the Broadcast Film Critics Association Award and the Phoenix Film Critics Society Award . Carter Burwell won the 2003 Film and Television Music Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers .
