action

Michael Oher, 17, spent his entire life in various homes in Memphis , Tennessee . His mother has multiple drug abuse criminal records, and whenever he was sent to a new family, he ran away from his new home. His friend's father works to ensure that he is accepted into a Christian school despite his poor test results. One day after school Michael meets little Sean "SJ" Jr., who quickly becomes his friend.

SJ's mother is interior designer Leigh Anne Tuohy and married to wealthy businessman Sean Tuohy. They both have a daughter named Collins. After a Thanksgiving celebration at her children's school before the holidays, Leigh Anne notices Michael walking in the dark, shivering in the street, all alone. Because she feels sorry for him, she offers him to spend the night with the Tuohys. The next morning she catches Michael just about to leave the driveway and offers him to celebrate Thanksgiving with her family. Michael is slowly becoming part of the family, even though Leigh Anne's friends warn her that Michael could be poor company for her own children. However, Leigh Anne is supported in her work by the whole family, Michael designed his own room, bought him clothes and got him a driver's license. A short time later, SJ and Michael have a car accident because Michael drove inattentively. However, SJ and himself are only slightly injured because Michael was able to hold the airbag open with his arm.

When Leigh Anne goes to school one day to inquire about Michael's mental capabilities, she is very astonished that his elementary knowledge is very weak in all areas, but he came off with 98 percent in the area of "natural protective instincts". Then her husband Sean also stands up for Michael. She is looking for his birth mother, who is a drug addict, and finally takes over the guardianship of Michael together with her husband. She also helps the coach of the school football team to use Michael's qualities correctly, who at the beginning only hesitantly blocks opponents.

After some initial difficulties, Michael is doing well on the field and is quickly becoming noticed by coaches from all over the country, especially those from the University of Tennessee. SJ tells Michael that his mother hated the University of Tennessee . She quickly realizes that Michael has to achieve at least a point average of 2.5 in order to play college football . For this reason, she organizes a private tutor to improve his grades. Likewise, the teachers at school are more considerate of Michael and rate his oral performance higher than his written ones. During a private class, his teacher Miss Sue tells him that the FBI is working with the University of Tennessee to identify the dead and burying the body parts of the unidentified dead under the university pitch. Eventually, Michael decides to go to Ole Miss, the University of Mississippi , with an average of 2.52. As a result, he receives a call from the National Athletes Association accusing the Tuohys of influencing Michael to choose Mississippi rather than his home state of Tennessee . The investigator tells him that the Tuohys are originally from Mississippi , that they also went to university there and that all of their dedication to Michael was aimed at just one goal. His school coach also got a better job after Michael opted for Mississippi.

Michael leaves the investigation room to confront Leigh Anne on charges that she only took him in to play for her old home later. Michael runs away and wants to go to his birth mother's apartment, where his old friends greet him first and then later make sexually suggestive remarks about his stepmother and stepsister. An argument breaks out, Michael knocks down the three armed thugs with ease and then flees. Leigh Anne is waiting for Michael at home, and when he doesn't show up, she looks for him. When he finally calls her, the two meet in a laundromat. Leigh Anne assures Michael that she will accept every decision he makes in football and for the rest of his life. Michael tells the investigator that he chose Mississippi because his entire family had already gone to school there. Michael is accepted into the University of Mississippi and receives a scholarship to play football. After seeing him off at school, Leigh Anne is happy about what she did for Michael.

The film ends with an original excerpt from the 2009 NFL Draft showing the real-life Michael Oher as he is introduced at the Baltimore Ravens .

"Although on the surface an optimistic story of overcoming racial and class barriers in a spirit of charity, the film undermines its credibility through the unreserved use of racist stereotypes that degrade the African-American protagonist to an object."

"Thanks to Sandra Bullock, who played brilliantly, with a Golden Globe and an Oscar as the affluent mother with a big heart, this drama about overcoming social and cultural differences comes across as strong."
