action
The four friends Travis, Abby, Brian and Danny observe bizarre things one night in the home of the local undertaker Ely Vaughn. Through the bedroom window they see how the man, who has been widowed for two years, is dancing across the room with a motionless figure in his arms. Inspired by an event from Travis' past, the teenagers suspect that it must be a ghost and decide to get to the bottom of the matter. When Ely doesn't seem to be at home one evening, the opportunity arises and three of the clique break into him. Travis, however, voicing his concerns about the company, stays a respectable distance from the house to warn the others if Ely returns early. What Abby, Brian and Danny then find in the undertaker's bedroom makes the three shudder: It's not a ghost, but the still well-preserved corpse of Mrs. Ely. In their panic, the three are finally surprised by Vaughn, who has been in the house the whole time. Abby and Brian escape, while Ely harasses the distraught Danny at the top of the stairs. Because he doesn't want to let his best friend down, Travis runs into the undertaker's house and has to watch helplessly as Danny first falls down the stairs and then breaks the teenager's neck with a kick. Travis and his two other friends flee and report Ely's crime to the local police. However, the sheriff doesn't believe a word of the kids and Vaughn Ely manages to portray Danny's death as a tragic accident. Nobody in Smithsville has the slightest doubt about the integrity of the respectable man, and so Travis, Abby, and Brian are ultimately on their own to prove that Ely Vaughn is a stone-cold psychopath. Very soon they painfully realize that their friend Danny is not the only corpse to be attributed to Ely ...

Reviews
- Scary-Movies.de : "Inside The Darkness is, contrary to the [sic!] Press text, neither" exciting ", nor" frightening "and certainly not a" top-class psychological thriller ". Because the film lacks any drive and the plot babbles away, which is also due to its conception, through which the viewer knows what is going on right from the start (see table of contents). On the one hand, there are no surprising twists in the largely transparent plot, on the other hand, the lousy script, the imaginative staging and the stereotypical actors prevent any atmosphere from developing. Dennis Quaid may have enjoyed slipping into a slightly different role here, but he doesn't seem overly challenged and credible. More often than not, one has the feeling, which is certainly thanks to the same German voice actor, that John Travolta would have fit better into the role of Ely Vaughn. This would have been a lot more diabolical. It wouldn't have hurt the film. "
- Moviesection.de : “Even if“ Inside the Darkness ”picks up speed towards the middle of the film and then becomes really exciting and scary, a mediocre script and an only halfway successful staging prevent the necessary atmosphere from being created. Especially when you have reconciled yourself with the story to some extent, you will be overwhelmed by such a stupid ending that you don't know exactly whether to laugh or howl. It's a shame, a lot of potential was wasted here! "
