action

The young Eli has been growing up alone with his father since the death of his mother and has problems at school. In order to top up his meager pocket money, he looks for something that can be used in abandoned industrial facilities. During one of his forays he finds fallen soldiers in futuristic suits. When one of the soldiers moves, he runs away.

Shortly thereafter, Eli's older brother Jimmy is released from prison. During his detention he owed other criminals, which he cannot repay now. The creditors threaten him and his family if repayment is not made.

During the night Eli remembered in his sleep that one of the weapons of the futuristic fighters fell into a shaft during his hasty escape. He sneaks out and takes her.

To repay the debt, Jimmy and his creditors rob his father's business. However, he is caught red-handed by the father and an exchange of fire ensues in which the father and the henchmen of gang boss Taylor die.

Jimmy and Eli flee as quickly as possible to escape the vengeful Taylor. On the way they discover the superior capabilities of the futuristic weapon and meet the dancer Milly, in whom Eli finds a kind of surrogate mother. At the same time, the three of them are now on the trail of the alien soldiers who want to get their weapon back.

When the police are looking for Jimmy and Eli because of the break-in, they are arrested in Vegas and imprisoned in a police station. Taylor raids the police station with his henchmen to get revenge on Jimmy. A little later the alien soldiers arrive. With their technique, they kill Taylor and explain to Eli that he is one of them. Jimmy is arrested.

production

It was directed by the Australian twin brothers Jonathan and Josh Baker . The screenplay, written by Daniel Casey , is based on the brothers' joint short film Bag Man from 2014. Kin is the first feature film directed by the brothers.

The casting of important roles with James Franco and Zoë Kravitz became known early on . Jack Reynor took on the role of the hunted Ex-Con. For Myles Truitt , who plays Reynor's adoptive brother Eli in the film, it is the first role in a feature film and also his first leading role.

The score was composed by the post-rock band Mogwai . The soundtrack for the film, which includes nine pieces of music, was released by Temporary Residence on August 31, 2018. On September 7, 2018 this rose to 4th place in the soundtrack album charts in the UK one. Friedrich Kuehne of the music magazine Spex thinks that the seemingly endless riff levels in the film music open up dimensions and forms, and as vanishing point music or escapist setting of the horizon, the soundtrack provides the red thread that Kin urgently needs. While Mogwai's soundtrack would do without its visual counterpart, the atmosphere of the film is closely linked to it, says Kuehne.

The film was also released in US cinemas on August 31, 2018. In August 2018, Ascot Elite released the first German trailer for the film. After the film was originally supposed to come to German cinemas on September 13, 2018, the release was postponed to 2019 one day before the planned release.

reception

Victor Redman from Bento says that Kin has at least as much potential for identification as Stranger Things , and maybe the film would have been better off as a series and thus with significantly more time for character development than on the big screen. The brave genre bender is definitely worth a visit to the cinema, according to Redman.

The worldwide revenue from cinema screenings so far amounts to around 10 million US dollars.
