The moment of truth (Original title: Truth ) is an American film biography by the director James Vanderbilt about the producer Mary Mapes and the presenter Dan Rather .
action
Mary Mapes hired a lawyer in 2004 because of problems with her employer, the US broadcaster CBS . She and her team had researched how the future US President George W. Bush was accepted into the National Guard , but could not be judged there by his superiors because he had not served for over a year. An informant had given Mary two letters that Dan Rather had presented on the CBS program 60 Minutes as evidence of Bush's misconduct. Upon investigation by a law firm, it was found that these two letters may have been forged. Mary Mapes and Dan Rather were fired with their team and supervisors. Mapes' career on US television ends abruptly.
The film tells the story from Mary Mapes' point of view largely as a flashback.
reception
The film received mostly mixed to positive reviews. At Metacritic , the film received a Metascore of 66/100 based on 35 reviews, while at Rotten Tomatoes 62 percent of the 147 reviews were positive.
The film service believes that the moment of truth is "an excitingly staged mock documentary of the event, which has unmistakable features of manipulation, not least because the main roles are cast with prominent stars".
