action
The President of the United States , worried about his responsibilities over disarmament, is plagued by nightmares . Alex Gardner, who is telepathic, should be consulted. However, he has gone into hiding and hangs out on horse races, where he is picked up by the President's staff and introduced to Jane DeVries, who in turn introduces him to her dream research.
He also meets his old mentor, Doctor Paul Novotny. He tells him about his current project, which is headed by government employee Bob Blair and makes it possible to enter the dreams of sleeping people. Alex meets Tommy, who is the only one who has managed to do this so far.
Alex himself tests his skills for the first time in a dream of a construction worker. In this way he also helps a boy through his nightmares and a married couple with their relationship problems. Shortly thereafter, without technical aids, he succeeds in entering a dream about Jane, on whom he has cast an eye.
However, Tommy's next patient, an old lady, dies of a heart attack. Alex meets Charlie Prince in a bar. When the latter tries to inform him of puzzling machinations, he is killed by Bob Blair's people; Alex is put under pressure, Novotny is killed. Bob Blair works with Tommy, who is supposed to kill the president in a dream marriage. Alex latches on to the president's dream and meets Tommy. Both fight a bitter fight in which Tommy is killed.
Alex settles accounts with Bob Blair in his own way; Alex and Jane become a couple.
