action
In Washington, DC , a judge commits suicide and his secretary is murdered. The deaf and dumb homeless man Carl Wayne Anderson is arrested near the crime scene. Some evidence suggests that he was responsible.
Public defender Kathleen Riley, a single career woman, is initially assigned the case against her will. Judge Matthew Bishop Helms will preside over the trial. The jury includes lobbyist Eddie Sanger, who initially hopes he can evade the obligation. Sanger works for the food industry and is busy bringing a major bill to Congress .
Sanger contacts Riley despite the ban. He calls her anonymously and tells the lawyer that the perpetrator must be right-handed while Anderson is left-handed. He later approaches her in the parking lot in front of the courthouse. Helms warns Riley that contact with any of the jurors would cost her admission to the bar.
The tissue remains on the found knife do not match the tissue of the murdered woman. Sanger and Riley are convinced Anderson is innocent and look for the real culprit. Sanger finds an award given to deserving judges near the crime scene.
The investigation leads Sanger and Riley to track down a ring of corrupt judges. The murdered woman had found incriminating evidence to the judges. One night in the courthouse, Riley is surprised by the murderer, whom she cannot recognize. During her self-defense, she injures his hand. Sanger arrives in time and saves her, the murderer flees.
Helms suspects prohibited contacts between one of the jury and the lawyer. He has the jury isolated from the outside world. Riley sets out evidence in the courtroom convicting Judge Helms of corruption and murder. At that moment you can see the bleeding from his injured hand.
