Saw 3D - completion (also Saw 3D , Saw VII and Saw: The Final Chapter ) is an American horror - splatter film by director Kevin Greutert from the year 2010 and the seventh part of the Saw franchises. The script was again written by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan . Filming began in February 2010 and ended in early April. The film was the only one in the series to be shot in 3D .

The film premiered in Argentina and Russia on October 21, 2010, and was released in US cinemas on October 29. In Germany, the seventh part of Saw was released in cinemas on November 25th.

action

The beginning of the film follows the end of Saw . You can see how Dr. Gordon , just after sawing off his foot, dragging through the corridors of the building and, with great pain, closes his wound on a hot steam pipe by pressing his leg against this pipe.

On a square filled with people there is a glass chamber in which Brad , Ryan and Dina are locked. The two men each had a relationship with Dina , but knew nothing of each other. Brad and Ryan now get their "test" based on the old Saw pattern. The two men have to push a frame with two circular saws , which is located between the two of them, away from them in order to kill the other with it. If both are still alive, after a minute, Dina , who is above the men, is killed by another circular saw. After some back and forth and discussions between the two, they finally decide to leave their beloved Dina to the fate of the third circular saw, which divides her body in half when the time is up. The people in front of the chamber witness the shocking scene.

Then you see the final scene of Saw VI , in which Jigsaw's successor , Detective Mark Hoffman , unexpectedly breaks free from the inverted bear trap. When John Kramer's ex-wife Jill Tuck sees this, she escapes as quickly as she can and finally hides in a corner of Hoffman's headquarters . The latter does not discover her during the whole action, but sutures up his wound that he suffered from the reverse bear trap. After she escaped from the warehouse, Jill goes straight to the police station and tells officer Matt Gibson that Detective Mark Hoffman , who previously saved Matt 's life, was behind the Jigsaw murders. In return, she receives immunity and police protection.

But the new Jigsaw doesn't stop “testing” people in life-threatening situations and is dedicated to a group of four racists: Dan , Evan , Kara and Jake . Evan is in a car that is in a garage and is glued to the driver's seat. Kara , Evan's friend, is under the car, just under the right rear tire. Dan is chained to a wall behind the car, and three chains run from his arms and lower jaw to the car. Jake is tied to the garage door in front of the car. It is now Evan's task to get out of the seat and operate a lever on the hood of the car. However, in order to loosen, he has to tear his skin off his back by pushing himself forward as it is glued to the seat. He cannot do this within half a minute of the car accelerating but not yet able to move because it has been jacked up and thus loses this test. When the car fell, it landed on Kara , ran over her and destroyed her skull in the process; driving away rips out Dan's arms and lower jaw, which were attached to the car, and dies too. Jake , who is chained to the garage door, dies from the car hitting him and the garage door. Evan is thrown out of the car in a collision with another car, crashes hard into the window and dies as well.

Since Hoffman desperately wants to get Jill to take revenge on her, he makes the police an offer to surrender Jill and in return to stop the game of Bobby Dagen , but the police do not respond.

Meanwhile, Bobby Dagen , the author of a book about a jigsaw test he allegedly survived but which never happened, is captured by Hoffman after meeting his self-help group for jigsaw victims , and a game for life begins for him too and death. He wakes up in a cylindrical cage and recognizes his wife Joyce on the monitors. He is told that he must reach his wife within an hour or she will die. His first test begins just a few seconds later, when the cage stands up and spikes protrude from the ground beneath it. With a few swinging movements, however, it makes it to safe ground relatively quickly. During his second test, his publicist Nina is tied to a chair and around her are four pointed steel rods that can drill through her neck. Bobby now has to pull a key through her mouth from inside her body with the help of a string. However, there is also a fish hook on the line that gets caught all over the body. The metal rods are connected to a device that measures the volume. If the noise is too loud, they continue to drive together. In the end, Bobby manages to pull the key out of Nina completely , but fails to save her because she screamed too loudly and is thus killed. During the third test, Suzanne , his lawyer, is tied up in a metal wheel that slowly moves forward so that her face comes closer and closer to three metal bars. He has to stand on an elevation in front of the bike and lift a parallel bar for 30 seconds to save her. In order to pry him up, however, he has to have four pointed metal rods stabbed in his stomach area, interrupting an electrical circuit, i.e. withstanding the strength of an electric shock. He slips three times so that the wheel has turned completely towards the bars and they bore into Suzanne's eyes and mouth. In the next test, he meets his closest friend Cale , who cannot see anything through an apparatus on his head. Bobby has to guide him through a course that is several meters above the ground. Then Cale has to use a key to unlock the device around his head in order to survive. Since the time is again limited to one minute and therefore very tight, Bobby throws him the key. However, Cale cannot catch him and is pulled up by a chain attached to the apparatus and hanged. In the penultimate test, Bobby has to remove two of his upper molars with the help of extraction pliers. Numbers were etched into these, with the help of which he can open the lock on the door for the final test. He manages to get to the final test, where he meets his wife Joyce again, who has spent the whole time chained on a platform. An electric fence is stretched around them. Now he has to stick two hooks through his scars on his chest, allegedly caused by a jigsaw trap, and pull himself up on a chain to connect two contacts that are supposed to interrupt the electrical voltage. But just before he can close the contacts, his chest muscles tear and he falls off. After the time has elapsed, metal walls close around Joyce, and you can see that it is an incinerator, Joyce burns in agony, while the seriously injured Bobby has to watch without a chance.

At the same time, a bomb exploded by Hoffman in front of the crime scene of the group trap in the garage. When all the investigators go outside to look, he puts the dead Dan out of the already locked body bag in a room behind a secret door and places himself in the body bag instead of the body. When the police show up at Bobby 's "venue" , Matt drives back to the scene of the garage murder. Here he discovers the secret passage in which he now suspects Hoffman . But instead of Hoffman , he finds the body of Dan and a self-gun range that kills him and two other police officers. Hoffman is now brought to the police station with the help of the hearse, which is also used as an autopsy facility. He jumps out of the body bag when it is opened and kills the doctor and other police officers until he finally stands in front of Jill Tuck . But when he grabs it, she sticks a nail file into his neck and runs away. Since the doors are locked, she hides in a room in which she is found by Hoffman a short time later. He beats her up, ties her to a chair and puts the already known inverted bear trap on her. Jill cannot break free and dies.

Hoffman now goes back to a hangar, which was used as storage for his utensils, and sets it on fire, so that it explodes after a short time. Shortly afterwards, he is attacked by three people in pig masks (known from previous Saw films) in front of the hangar. One of them turns out to be Dr. Lawrence Gordon. Flashbacks show that Jill sent him a video of John Kramer and that if something should happen to Jill , he should deal with Hoffman in Kramer's favor. One now also learns that Dr. Gordon received medical care from Jigsaw after his escape and helped him with all medical problems, such as inserting the key behind Michael’s eye in Saw II , sewing up Trevor’s eyes and Art Blank’s mouth from the fourth Saw, and getting the medication for John when he received medical care from Lynn in the third part . Dr. Gordon brings him into the bathroom from the first film, throws the saw, which he used to saw off his foot in the first part, out of the room and leaves Hoffman alone with the words "Game over".

Reviews

“Even if the end twist is announced early and the rotating saws and perfidious jaw locks are already known from earlier parts - the idea of having one of the tortures take place in a shop window raises the pulse, as does Bobby & Co.'s struggles for survival. Which one cannot exactly say about the superfluous 3D effects. Conclusion: Certainly not a milestone in the series, but part 7 scores with some surprises. "

"Blood-soaked splatter inferno for the hardcore fans of the series."

"Saw 7 creates the unbelievable and breaks again with its own self-made rules."

“Saw 7 is a popcorn splatter thriller based on tried-and-tested patterns with no real depth. Solid, but unfortunately only for kids. 3D technology, pop colors and Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington as a doomed racist make this unmistakably clear. And for that reason alone it is to be feared that there will be a few more accomplishments. If that works? Freddy, Jason or Michael have already shown it several times! But the fact remains that there is only one real saw. That this is not the nostalgic attitude of an oversaturated film fan, but also plays a role in the minds of the makers themselves, can be felt in every second of the hopefully last part. So every effort is made to relate the film to its origins. Suddenly old acquaintances appear who have almost been forgotten. The almost dead Doctor Gordon hobbled around without a foot. Other survivors are also involved and help each other in a Jigsaw self-help group. The recurring motif of the first part finally brings us a few highlights. So John Kramer gets various short appearances, which he plays in the usual confident manner. With this, Saw rises itself to a myth ... and in a practical way brings the new Saw kids to take care of the other parts as well. So the money machine is still running ... luck for the makers that Jigsaw cannot punish his own series! "

“Light and shadow are close together in the technical implementation of Saw 7. After the torture devices in the previous parts became more and more similar, they now appear in new splendor. After all, it's something completely different when your bowels fly towards you when you saw through a woman's body and don't just hit the floor. However, the dirty look typical of the franchise suffers from this: The images of Saw 7 seem much cleaner and clearer overall than those of the predecessors, but this also affects the atmosphere. In addition, the use of computer animations, of which there are more here than in any other part, is much easier to see in 3D. The blood spurting out of the bodies in fountains sometimes appears strangely pink, which doesn't exactly add to the horror of the respective scene. Conclusion: In the end, Saw is breaking new ground again, and not just because of the implementation in 3D. Nevertheless, the makers would do well to make their announcement come true and not allow themselves to be carried away by the good grossing result of the seventh part of further atrocities. "

"If you don't expect great 3-D effects or a final ending for the series, Saw 7 is once again a successful part with many exciting pitfalls. Some surprises may not blow long-time fans off their socks, but they are well presented. "

production

development

The Variety magazine reported in July 2009 that Lions Gate green light gave for the film and that David Hackl return as director. Likewise, the producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules , as well as the writers Melton and Dunstan should return. Pre-production began on September 14, 2009, after which it was announced the following month that Saw VII would be filmed in 3D. Saw VI was originally supposed to be followed by two films , but Patrick Melton stated in a podcast in December 2009 that Saw 3D would be the final installment in the series and answer several previously unanswered questions, such as the fate of Saw protagonist Lawrence Gordon and other survivors from the previous films as the series draws to its final conclusion. This is partly due to the low and disappointing “box office” numbers of Saw VI. The budget of all the predecessors of Saw 3D never exceeded 11 million US dollars, but by filming in 3D, according to Kevin Greutert, Saw 3D is the "most expensive Saw film to date" at a cost of about $ 17 million. Kevin Greutert was about to start work on the sequel to Paranormal Activity , which was slated to be released the same day as Saw 3D , when Lionsgate suddenly replaced Hackl with Greutert as director, which was possible due to a certain clause in his contract . When Greutert arrived on the set, he rewrote the script. Melton stated, “He has a lot of ideas, but it's a bit hard and extreme to implement all of these ideas because sets have been built, people have been cast, props have been bought or created, and with the Saw films they are so specific in set design because of the traps. It becomes very problematic and difficult to change things a whole bunch right in the middle of it ". ("He has a lot of ideas, but it's a bit difficult to implement them all because sets were built, people were cast, props were built or bought, and the set design in the Saw films is so special because of the traps. It's very problematic and difficult to to change loads of things in the middle. ")

In February 2012 the film was confiscated nationwide by the Tiergarten district court in Berlin for depicting violence (according to Section 131 StGB) , although the SPIO / JK even gave its lower approval no serious risk to young people. In January 2013, the rights owner StudioCanal took action against the judgment and was able to lift the seizure.

Financial success

At a production cost of around $ 17 million, the film grossed over $ 136 million worldwide. In just the United States played Saw 3D US dollars 46 million. In Germany it was about 11 million US dollars.

Casting

Casting began in the middle of December 2009. While Tobin Bell initially only signed for six films, he has inadvertently confirmed his return as Jigsaw in several interviews and news articles about the film. When Betsy Russell , who plays Tobin Bell's wife, was asked in an interview if Bell would take up his role again, she confirmed that he would "definitely be in Saw VII 3D ". Costas Mandylor was the first actor to confirm he would return to the role. Russell was interviewed by Movieweb.com on her first day on the set. She said that "You will see a lot of Jill in this movie ... I say you will, which is great for me."

On February 22, 2010, Cary Elwes was listed on the official Toronto Film & Television list for Saw 3D, but on March 8, his name was removed from the list along with several others. For some time now, his appearance as Dr. Lawrence Gordon, from the first Saw movie, is now officially announced on the Saw News page. On March 3, 2010, it was confirmed that Chad Donella will appear in the film. Although new to the series, it has been said that "You will surely not forget Chad in Saw 3D ". Gabby West, the second season winner of Scream Queens , a reality show , got a role on Saw 3D like the first season winner in Saw VI . Marcus Dunstan confirmed in the audio commentary for the Director's Cut of Saw VI that Tanedra Howard would return as Simone. Chester Bennington , from Linkin Park, plays Evan in the film and also contributed the song Condemned to the Saw 3D soundtrack.

Filming

Filming began in Toronto on February 8, 2010, and ended on Monday, April 12, 2010 in the morning after night-time filming, which took place mainly outdoors. The shooting of the "Fallen" scenes began on March 8th. It is filmed entirely in 3D instead of traditionally filming and then converting the material. The sets have been redesigned so that they can be filmed with 3D cameras. Before opting for 3D, producer Burg and others watched a minute of the first Saw movie that was converted to 3D for it and were thrilled, which ultimately led them to choose Saw VII for 3D.

While settling on a style of 3D recording, Burg felt that the audience would want multiple moments with objects moving into the audience. He was referring to My Bloody Valentine 3D . He admitted that this method would be used, but also showed an interest in shooting scenes from the victims' perspective. Dunstan added that there are many criteria and it takes a lot of discipline to create these moments. “We had a very flat surface to try to get a reaction out of you. Now we're going to push out and envelop the viewer, but at the same time keep the patterns and schemes that worked and were successful. ”Tobin Bell, commenting on filming in 3D, said that it won't affect its conduct or methods of acting, it will be an "interesting experience". Bell said his quality of acting was more important to him than the special effects. He will take advice and instructions from the 3D technicians to take advantage of the cast while shooting.

Jigsaw

On November 11, 2010, Kevin Greutert announced that there would be no eighth part of the Saw film series , but rather a reboot of the series is being considered. So Greutert literally: “I have no control over such matters, but I can definitely say that this was the last SAW. There really is no other avenue to go now, apart from a reboot, which I think could come in a few years. For the moment, however, the agreement between producer and studio looks like this: We should end it on good terms now. "

On February 9, 2016 it was announced that another part of the series entitled Saw: Legacy is in the planning stage. James Wan and Leigh Whannell will serve as executive producers, the script will be written by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger, who previously wrote the script for Piranha 3D . According to the website bloody-disgusting.com, the story should take place a few years after Saw 3D . Body parts of people who were severely tortured are said to have been found everywhere in the city. All traces lead to the man who has been dead for almost a decade: John Kramer.

In June 2017, the title change from Saw: Legacy to Jigsaw was officially announced.
