Miranda Lin Otto (born December 16, 1967 in Brisbane ) is an Australian actress .

biography

Her parents are Lindsay Otto and the Australian actor Barry Otto . Her sister, who is almost twenty years younger than her, is the up-and-coming actress and director Gracie Otto . Otto grew up in Brisbane and Newcastle for most of her youth and lived in Hong Kong for some time . She discovered her interest in acting through her father, who carried out this activity himself.

Otto began medical training, but gave it up for her acting career. She studied at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney , the drama school that Cate Blanchett and Mel Gibson attended. She graduated in 1990. She became active herself for the first time at the Nimrod Theater , where she appeared in several stage plays. She made her film debut in 1986 in the war drama Emma's War . In the following years she was able to get other small film roles in other film productions.

In 1991 she had her breakthrough with the film The Girl Who Came Late , in which she played the lead role. The following year she was nominated for Best Actress by the Australian Film Institute for portraying a young woman who has the ability to communicate with horses . This success made her a well-known actress in her Australian homeland, who was nominated three more times by the Australian Film Institute for her cinematic representations for film awards in the 1990s.

Otto made the leap to Hollywood in 2000 with the thriller Shadow of Truth , in which she appeared alongside Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer . A year later she played a role in the comedy Human Nature . However, the film wasn't a huge commercial hit and it also flunked criticism.

In 1999 Otto was cast by the successful director Peter Jackson for the role of Éowyn in The Lord of the Rings . The filming broke records and Otto finally achieved international fame through her participation.

In 2005 she was contacted by Steven Spielberg , who was impressed by her portrayal in The Lord of the Rings , to have her play Tom Cruise's wife in his new project War of the Worlds . Otto, pregnant at the time, wanted to decline at first, but finally accepted after the script had been reworked in her favor. In the years that followed, Otto concentrated increasingly on roles in television series and theater productions.

For a while she was with the Australian actor Richard Roxburgh , but separated from him again. In 2002 Otto met the Australian actor Peter O'Brien while filming , whom she married on January 1, 2003 and with whom she lives in Australia. In April 2005 she gave birth to a daughter there.
