Downhill is a 2020 US - Austrian feature film directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell . The film is a remake of the Swedish drama Force Majeure by Ruben Östlund (2014).

The premiere was on January 26, 2020 at the Sundance Film Festival . In the US, the film was released on February 14, 2020. The Austrian premiere is scheduled for August 28, 2020 as part of the 8th Kitzbühel Film Festival . In Germany and Austria, the cinema release was planned for the beginning of April 2020 and was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

Billie and Pete would like to spend a relaxing winter holiday in the Alps with their children and enjoy the snowy winter landscape. When the family is sitting on the terrace of a ski hut at lunch , an artificial avalanche is triggered that seems to get out of control.

Pete leaves his family behind in the face of the impending avalanche and instead only keeps himself and his smartphone safe, testing the relationship between him and his wife.

Production and Background

The shooting took place from January 9th to March 1st, 2019. The film was shot in the Austrian federal states of Tyrol and Vienna . Filming locations included Fiss , Ischgl and the Kaunertal .

Most of the skiing scenes were recorded in the Silvretta Arena . The scene in which the avalanche rushes towards the Stanton family takes place on the viewing terrace of the Wonnealm in the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis ski area . For the shooting, the crew got their own Silvretta Bahn gondola , which was reserved only for them. A plaque was placed in gondola 64 to commemorate the film. In Vienna, the film was shot for two weeks in Hall 1 of the Rosenhügel Studios .

Fox Searchlight Pictures , Likely Story Ltd and Wiener Filmhaus Films were involved in the production . The production was supported by the funding initiative Filmstandort Austria (FISA) and Cine Tirol .

Actor Kristofer Hivju was already seen in the Swedish original Force Majeure by Ruben Östlund (2014).
