Henry & Julie - The Gangster and the Diva (Original title: Henry's Crime ) is a romantic US comedy film from 2010 by director Malcolm Venville with Keanu Reeves , James Caan and Vera Farmiga . The innocent convicted alleged bank robber Henry (Reeves) raids the same bank with his former cellmate Max (Caan) after his release and falls in love with the eccentric actress Julie (Farmiga).

Henry Torne working on a motorway - tollbooth and leads a boring life with his wife Debbie in Buffalo . His former schoolmate Eddie Vibes persuades him to stand in for his sick friend Joe as a player at a baseball game. On the way to the game, the two of them stop at a bank with two other players to withdraw money from an ATM. Eddie and his friends surprisingly raid the bank and Henry, who is waiting in the car, is innocently arrested as an accomplice by the security guard Frank. Henry has to go to jail for 3 years, where he meets the old crook Max.

When Henry is released early from prison, he finds that Debbie, who broke up with him, is pregnant with Joe. Max, who is also released, can be persuaded to break into the bank and rob it. They want to use an old buried tunnel, the entrance of which is in the theater next to the bank. There an ensemble with the leading actress Julie Ivanova is rehearsing the play The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov .

Henry and Julie meet in a traffic accident caused by Julie, in which Henry is slightly injured. When he and Max are looking for the tunnel to the bank at the back entrance of the theater, they are surprised by Julie. Under a pretext they visit the theater and find the tunnel entrance behind a cloakroom wall.

Max starts out as an unpaid employee in the theater. Julie and Henry fall in love and Julie learns about the planned bank robbery. After one of the main actors in the play ends the rehearsal work after a dispute with director Darek that Max has initiated, Henry steps in as an actor, giving the gang of gangsters, which Joe is now a part of, access to the cloakroom with the tunnel entrance. The frustrated security guard Frank sees through their plans and finally also participates in the bank robbery. Eddie joins the gang of bank robbers through the alcoholic Joe, against Max's will.

On the premiere evening of the play, a large sum of money is delivered to the bank. The gangsters decide to take the opportunity. Henry tells Julie about the time of the attack and the planned escape, as a result of which she separates from Henry in an argument. During the performance, Max, Joe and Eddie rob the bank with the help of Frank. Henry plays in the play and helps pack the wads of money during his breaks. Eddie pulls a gun and wants to run away with Joe and the stolen money, but after injuring Henry in the leg, he is overwhelmed and left tied up in the tunnel. Max, Joe and Henry flee with the money, but on the way Henry decides to return to Julie to ask her to come along.

Reviews

For the lexicon of international film, the film entertains "with absurd scenes." In addition, he draws "a coherent portrait of a man whose pursuit of revenge endangers his happiness". Overall, this "mixture of gangster and love drama [...] cleverly combines the staging of a Chekhov play with the narrated reality of the planned coup".
