Nothing but the Truth is an American political thriller from the year 2008 . It was directed by Rod Lurie , who also wrote the script and co-produced the film.

action

The film begins with an attempted assassination attempt on the President of the United States . In response, Venezuela is attacked, where the US government suspects the perpetrators of the crime.

Journalist Rachel Armstrong's son goes to the same school as Erica Van Doren's little daughter. Armstrong, who for the newspaper Capitol Sun-Times works, learns of a informant that Van Doren, a CIA - Agent is. She publishes an article that publishes explosive information about the background to the attack and states that Van Doren was unable to find any parallels to the attack on the US president on a trip to Venezuela.

Armstrong is charged. However, she refuses to disclose the source of her information. Her lawyer, Albert Burnside, defends her in court, but the journalist is arrested. For over a year, principled Armstrong refused to name the informant. During this time their marriage breaks up and their young son becomes estranged from her.

After the Supreme Court in favor of the national security decision and so Armstrong in custody would remain, she dismisses the judge from the same, as would no longer be assumed that they divulge their informants.

Shortly after her release, Armstrong was arrested again and charged with refusing to interfere with a federal investigation. Armstrong accepts an offer to go to prison for two years instead of being officially charged, with the prospect of a long sentence. In the final scene, Armstrong remembers her source. It was Van Doren's young and awkward daughter herself who Armstrong had let in on her mother's activities without malicious intent and to whom she had promised not to betray them.

background

The plot of the film - like Resurrecting the Champ previously produced by Rod Lurie in 2007 - is inspired by true events. The background to the film Nothing but Truth is the so-called Plame Affair .

The film was shot in Memphis and Shelby County , Tennessee . Filming began on 10 October 2007 and ended on 19 November 2007. Production costs were estimated at 11.5 million dollars . The world premiere took place on September 8, 2008 at the Toronto International Film Festival . After a screening on December 19, 2008 in New York City , the film was shown in selected cinemas in the USA from January 9, 2009. This was followed by a screening at the Santa Barbara Film Festival on January 22, 2009. Due to legal restrictions, the film was not shown outside of theaters in New York City and Los Angeles . The film was released on DVD in the United States on April 28, 2009. It was released on DVD in Germany on February 18, 2010.

For the scene in which Vera Farmiga is subjected to a polygraph test, in which she confirms that she is a CIA agent and that her name is Erica Van Doren, a real polygraph was set up on the set and operated by an expert. After the filming of this scene was completed, the lie detector tester pointed out to the director Rod Lurie that the test had confirmed Farmiga's truthful statement and that she had thus tricked the test. According to Roger Ebert, Matt Dillon played his role as if he were not the antagonist , but as if he were embodying the honorable role of the film.

Reviews

Todd McCarthy wrote in Variety magazine on September 10, 2008 that the film was "cleverly constructed". The portrayals of Kate Beckinsale and Vera Farmiga are "nice". Beckinsale does a good job of conveying the courage of the character being played.

Michael Rechtshaffen wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on September 8, 2008 that the film was a "typical intelligent [...] political thriller" that lived on the achievements of the leading actors Kate Beckinsale, Vera Farmiga and Alan Alda. However, the director creates neither special tension nor fast pace, which would draw the viewer more in.

Conclusion from Prisma.de : "A top-class star ensemble in a multi-layered political thriller about the price of integrity and freedom."

Awards

Kate Beckinsale was nominated for Best Actress at the 2009 Critics' Choice Movie Awards , while Vera Farmiga was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. The film won the 2010 Saturn Award for best DVD release.
