Sofroniewo ( Bulgarian Софрониево , until 1934 Sarbeniza / Serbenica / Srbenica (Сърбеница)) is a village with 1,451 inhabitants in northwestern Bulgaria in the municipality of Misija (Мизия). It is located in the Bulgarian Oblast of Wraza in the Danube Plain at about 112 meters above sea level. The next places within a four kilometer radius are Butan (Бутан), Lipnitsa (Липница), Kruschoviza (Крушовица), Vojwodowo (Войводово). The municipal administration seat in Misija is about eight kilometers to the northeast. About a kilometer north of Sofroniewo, the Ogosta River (река Огоста) flows north to the Danube . The main source of income for the village is agriculture.
history
The first written mention comes from the 17th century. In 1673 the place is mentioned under the name Sirbenitsche (Сирбениче) in an Ottoman administrative document. The name Sarbeniza (Сърбеница) or alternatively transcribed Srbenica or Serbenica, the place carried until the coup in Bulgaria by the right-wing national organization Zveno under the leadership of Kimon Georgiev and the administrative reform carried out by him in 1934. From 1934 it was officially called Sofroniewo.
