James Watkins (* 1978 ) is a British screenwriter and film director .

Life

Watkins began his work in the film business initially as a screenwriter, working with the film production company Working Title Films , with whom he had concluded a first-look writing deal . The first film to be made was Invisible Eyes in 2002 . Gone followed in 2006 - run for your life . The 2008 film Eden Lake marked Watkins' directorial debut, and he also wrote the script. For this, Watkins was nominated for the Douglas Hickox Award at the British Independent Film Awards 2008 . In 2009 he won the International Fantasy Film Award at Fantasporto and he was awarded the Special Prize of the Jury at the Sitges Festival Internacional de Cinema Fantàstic de Catalunya .

His second feature film was made in 2012 with Die Frau in Schwarz . In 2016 his third directorial work Bastille Day with Idris Elba in the lead role was released. The action thriller about a CIA agent who tries to prevent a terrorist attack in Paris was shown in French cinemas a few days before the attack in Nice on July 14, 2016 and was subsequently canceled. Previously there had been a discussion about the French start date, which was scheduled for the European Football Championship .
