action

A tow truck drives on a country road through a forest in the Appalachian Mountains and stops when a doe unexpectedly crosses the road. Suddenly a young, blood-smeared woman appears who hits the side window of the car and collapses exhausted. At the same time, a rescue team made up of cave climbers and the local police went to look for the women who were missing in the previous film.

Sarah, one of these women, was found and is already in the hospital. Sheriff Vaines and his deputy, Elen Rios, go to interrogate Sarah. Sarah is severely traumatized and cannot remember the last two days. The sheriff suspects her to be connected to the disappearance of the other women, since one of the blood stains on Sarah's clothes shows the blood type of her companion Juno.

The sheriff sets off with Sarah and a few others to the "Chapel Mine" with its largely unexplored cave system. There they first find the body of Rebecca. Sarah's memory comes back in fragments and she warns against going deeper into the cave. When they come into a tunnel, Sarah remembers the terrible experiences with the "crawlers" and runs away, followed by Sheriff Vaines. The rest of them continue their search together. While Vaines is still following the trail of Sarah, he hears noises in the immediate vicinity when suddenly a cave monster appears in front of him and it pulls the trigger of his pistol, startled. This causes the cave ceiling to collapse over the four distant group members. Cath, separated from the others, is enclosed in a cavity. With the promise of freeing Cath, the current group of three looks for alternative ways, whereby they get into a part of the cave with a lot of bones and find the video camera with the records of the missing women.

Just as the video recordings reveal that the missing women were attacked by cave monsters, someone is standing right next to the group who is attacking them. This will disband the group. Rios tries to find the group again by shouting. Sarah stalks from behind to cover Rios's mouth as she attracts a cave monster with her shouting. The crawler turns away from Rios, picks up the trail of Dan and kills him.

In the meantime, Cath has managed to free herself from the cavity when she was also attacked by a cave monster. While she is wandering around in the dark, disoriented, she meets Greg, who is hiding from them. They move on together and can escape another attack. They discover Sam's body hanging lifelessly on the rope from the ceiling. In order to be able to overcome the large crevice, Cath uses Sam's body to swing himself over. You are under attack again. To save Cath, Greg plunges into the depths with the cave monster pulling on her. Cath is killed herself shortly afterwards when she attracts another crawler with her panicked cries for help for Greg.

Sheriff Vaines is rescued from an attack by two crawlers by Juno, who manages to kill the crawlers. Vaines and Juno move on together. After a while Juno, Vaines, Sarah and Rios meet. Vaines handcuffs Sarah to himself. When crossing a narrow gap, it slips and hangs on the precipice. Sarah tries in vain to pull him up so as not to crash with him. Rios chops off Vaines hand with an ice ax , so that he falls down and Sarah is saved.

Eventually, the three of them end up in the crawler's pantry, which also has an exit to the surface. The injured Greg is also lying in the pantry when he grabs Juno and she is frightened and alerted the cave monsters. Here Sarah, Rios and Juno have to defend themselves against a horde of crawlers. Juno is fatally injured by a crawler. Sarah saves Rios by screaming loudly and luring all the crawlers to her, which seals her fate. Rios escapes the cave system and tries to call for help on his cell phone. In the last scene you can see Rios being knocked unconscious by the driver of the tow truck with a shovel and being brought back to the exit of the cave system, where a crawler jumps out.

Reviews (selection)

“In 2005, the six protagonists of Neil Marshall's uncomfortable horror discovery The Descent found out firsthand what it means when a cave tour suddenly turns into a hell tour . And not only in Hollywood, but also in independent cinema they sometimes come back. While Marshall recently went completely off the leash with the end-time horror actioner Doomsday , he deliberately left out a sequel to his greatest success to date. Apparently the Briton did not want to repeat himself. Because the sequel The Descent 2 is nothing more than a repetition . But warmed up does not necessarily have to taste bad, especially if it tasted particularly good the first time. The Descent cutter Jon Harris knows exactly what he's doing on his directorial debut and delivers nasty survival horror on a larger budget, which doesn't come close to the original, but still offers good genre food. "

"Harris doesn't even try to write new pages in his sequel and copies the first film so shamelessly that you can almost call it a remake ."
