Bastille Day is a US-American - Luxembourgish - French action - thriller from the year 2016 . Directed by James Watkins , who co- wrote the script with Andrew Baldwin . It premiered in Germany on June 23, 2016.
action
The American Michael Mason finds his way through Paris as a pickpocket . One evening he steals a young woman's bag with a bomb in it. When it explodes and kills four people, Michael is the focus of the terrorist manhunt. The CIA agent Sean Briar, stationed in Paris, tracks him down, takes him to a secret prison and interrogates him. Michael demonstrates his dexterity to Briar and in the process also gets a knife that enables him to escape.
With the help of Michael’s testimony, Briar locates Zoe in whose pocket the bomb was. Zoe tells Briar that her partner instigated her and provided her with the bomb. When they arrive at his apartment, they find him dead, and a police card reveals him to be an undercover agent.
In fact, a corrupt group of policemen is behind the bomb attack, which they follow up with an insurgent Internet campaign with which the perpetrators provoke mass demonstrations. However, this general chaos is not being used for terrorist purposes, but rather as a distraction from breaking into the National Bank. With the help of Michael and Zoe, Briar can ultimately prevent the thieves from escaping with their loot.
production
The shooting took place in Paris from October to December 2014.
The film should have been in theaters in February (UK) and March (D) 2016; Because of the terrorist attacks on November 13, 2015 in Paris , Studiocanal postponed the film release for UK, Ireland and Sweden to April. In France, the film was released on the eve of the eponymous national holiday (July 14th) ; After the attack in Nice on July 14, 2016, the distributor immediately withdrew the film posters and shortly afterwards the film itself.
reception
The film service believes that Bastille Day is a "brilliantly choreographed [r] action film [that] leaves the real goal of public uncertainty in the dark for a long time", but "with gripping stunts, high tension, unfamiliar Paris images and two refreshing actors" shines that would give the buddy movie esprit and vitality.
