Richard Madden (born June 18, 1986 in Elderslie ) is a Scottish actor . He gained international fame through his role as Robb Stark in the fantasy series Game of Thrones .

Life

Madden is the son of a firefighter and a school assistant and grew up in his native Elderslie, near Glasgow . At the age of 11, he joined the youth theater program at the Paisley Arts Center in an attempt to overcome his shyness. He was soon cast in a leading role as Sebastian in the television series Barmy Aunt Boomerang , which aired in 6 episodes from 1999 to 2000. He then studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama from 2007 .

During this time he played in the play Mensch Meier (English: Tom Fool ) by Franz Xaver Kroetz and was discovered by a team from the Globe Theater . There he played Romeo in the last semester of his theater studies in a production of Romeo and Juliet on numerous open-air stages in the summer. In 2009 he got the lead role as Dean McKenzie on the BBC series Hope Springs . In 2010 he played Ripley in the movie Chatroom . In 2011 he appeared in the six-part Channel 4 series Sirens as Ashley Greenwick .

From 2011 to 2013, he starred for three seasons as Robb Stark in the HBO series Game of Thrones , the film adaptation of the fantasy saga A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin . With the rest of the cast of the series, he was nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award in the category Best Acting Ensemble in a TV Series - Drama in 2012 and 2014 . In 2012 he also played in the two-part mini - series Birdsong based on a world war novel by Sebastian Faulks . Since 2015 he has also played the leading role of Cosimo de 'Medici in the television series The Medici: Rulers of Florence.

In 2018 he starred in the drama series Bodyguard , published on Netflix , in the lead role of agent David Budd . His performance earned him a Golden Globe Award in the category Best Series Actor - Drama a

Madden was privately dating actress Jenna Coleman from 2011 to 2016 . From 2017 to 2018 he was in a relationship with actress Ellie Bamber .
