Bodyguard is a 2018 British drama series directed by Jed Mercurio ( Line of Duty ) and starring Richard Madden and Keeley Hawes .
action
The traumatized war veteran David Budd is a policeman with the London Metropolitan Police Service . On a private trip, he was able to prevent a suicide attack on a train to London-Euston and was then promoted to the PPO or bodyguard for Home Secretary Julia Montague.
Montague tries to enforce the new security law RIPA-18, which is supposed to transfer competencies from the police to the domestic secret service. It turns out as the series progresses that she is working towards becoming Prime Minister. In doing so, she receives support from the secret service, which passes on her incriminating material about high-ranking politicians and opponents of the security law.
In the course of the series she is the target of two attacks. She escapes the first thanks to Budd. As a result, the two of them have an affair. The second attack was successful.
Since he was unable to protect her, Budd tries to take his own life. The attempt fails, instead he comes across puzzles. He then tries on his own to clear up the background to the attacks on Montague, and gets caught up in a barely penetrable tangle of secrets from the various security services. He finds traces of attacks and suspected corruption in the secret service, colleagues and superiors as well as in organized crime.
At the end it emerges that ultimately a network of organized crime and an Islamist cell are partly responsible for the various attacks, partly alongside one another. Budds boss Lorraine Craddock provided them with inside information for the attacks on the interior minister. Those responsible are captured.
At the end of the series, David goes into psychological treatment to combat his PTSD and finds his way back to family life.
