Candi Staton
Candi Staton (* 13. March 1940 as Canzetta Maria Staton in Hanceville , Alabama ) is an American Soul - and Gospel - singer . She celebrated her greatest success in the second half of the 1970s, when she changed her style to disco music for a few years and landed an international hit with Young Hearts Run Free .
Career
Candi Staton grew up in a Christian boarding school in Nashville , where she sang in the Jewel Gospel Trio. She found inspiration and role models during regular tours with soul stars such as Aretha Franklin and Mahalia Jackson . In 1970 Staton's debut album, I'm Just a Prisoner , was released by the Fame record label . In the following years she rose to become one of the most successful singers of Southern Soul . Her version of the Tammy Wynette hit Stand by Your Man (1970) was as much a hit as I'd Rather Be an Old Man's Sweetheart (Than a Young Man's Fool) (1969), Sweet Feeling (1970) and He Called Me Baby (1971). All of the titles reached the top 10 of the American R&B charts. A cover version of the Elvis Presley classic In the Ghetto (1972) also attracted attention. She was nominated twice for a Grammy in those years , in 1970 and 1972, each for "Best Female R&B Vocal Performance". In 1974 Staton switched from Fame to Warner , where she achieved another top 10 hit in the R&B charts in the same year with As Long as He Takes Care of Home .
From 1974 Staton turned to pop and disco music and landed their greatest hit in 1976 with the title Young Hearts Run Free, written and produced by Dave Crawford . Among other things, it was number 2 in Great Britain and in the top 20 in the USA. It even reached number 1 in the R&B charts. Until 1982, it remained more or less loyal to the disco genre, with songs like Run to Me , Destiny (1976), Victim (1978), When You Wake Up Tomorrow (1979) and Looking for Love (1980) were her other hits in the American disco charts. A cover version of the Bee Gees hit Nights on Broadway was her second and final top 10 hit in the UK charts. There she achieved another Top 40 hit in 1982 with another cover, Elvis Presley's Suspicious Minds .
Then she went back to her roots, sang gospel and got involved in Christian TV programs. It also released numerous albums with Christian music, which brought her two more Grammy nominations in 1983 ( Make Me an Instrument ) and 1986 ( Sing a Song ). This time, however, in the category "Best Soul Gospel Performance".
Staton rarely recorded records outside of the gospel genre. A remarkable song was written in 1986: You Got the Love , a collaboration with The Source . The piece was not very successful at first, for example as Staton's last, inglorious entry in the R&B charts (88th place). Only a mix in 1991 brought success: 4th place in Great Britain. Mixes of the song made it into the UK's top 10 two more times (No. 3 in 1997, 7th in 2006) On February 22, 2004, a version of the song also accompanied the final scene of the last episode of the series Sex and the City .
In 1999 Staton recorded the dance CD Outside In , their first “worldly” album in 17 years. The single Love on Love was released in the same year as a hit in Great Britain as a remix of Young Hearts Run Free . With the album His Hands , Staton recorded a traditional R&B album that received much attention from the music press in 2006, another followed in 2009 with Who's Hurting Now? . In the same year, You Got the Love received a lot of attention again, this time in the form of a cover version of Florence + the Machine .
Private
Candi Staton was married three times. Between 1959 and 1968 she was married to Joe Williams. From this marriage there were four children. The second marriage with the blind R&B singer Clarence Carter only lasted from 1970 to 1973. The singer also has a child from this marriage. Staton was most recently married to John Sussewell from 1979 to 1998.
