Sascha Goc (born April 14, 1979 in Calw , Baden-Württemberg ) is a German ice hockey player who last played for the Schwenninger Wild Wings from the German ice hockey league . During his career he was active for the New Jersey Devils and the Tampa Bay Lightning from the American National Hockey League . He was in the squad of the German national team several times , with which he took part in four world championships and the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin . Sascha Goc is the older brother of Marcel Goc and Nikolai Goc .

Career

Sascha Goc began his ice hockey career at ESG Esslingen , from where he moved to Schwenningen in 1994 to join the youngsters. At the age of 16, the right-handed shooter already played his first game with the Schwenninger Wild Wings in the DEL. During the 1996/97 season , the trained defender was a member of the regular squad and was used 41 times, with four points scorer . Due to the good performance, not only those responsible for some DEL clubs, but also talent scouts from the National Hockey League became aware of Goc, so that Goc was selected in the sixth round in the sixth round of the New Jersey Devils in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft . The defender stayed at SERC for one more season before moving to the USA in the summer of 1998. The last season at the Wild Wings was positive for him. In 48 games Goc scored ten points, but he and his team were eliminated in the second round of the play-off qualification with 1: 2 defeats against the Krefeld Pinguine .

The right-shooter spent his first year in North America mainly in the American Hockey League with the Albany River Rats , the New Jersey Devils' farm team at the time . At the councils, Goc has consistently performed well. After he was able to increase his points yield in the following years and finally counted among the defenders with the highest points in the team, he got the chance to prove himself at the New Jersey Devils. However, Goc completed only 13 NHL games in which he scored no point, so the management of the Devils transferred him to the Tampa Bay Lightning at the beginning of the 2001/02 season . There the defensive player was also predominantly in the farm team at the time, the Springfield Falcons , and scored twelve points scorer in 32 missions.

In the end, Sascha Goc had little hope of a renewed, permanent commitment in the NHL and accepted a contract offer from Adler Mannheim from the DEL, where he finally experienced his most successful sporting period. In 2003 the defender won the newly introduced German Ice Hockey Cup by beating the Kölner Haie 5: 4 in the final . Goc was an important part of the Mannheim back team at this time, but decided at the end of the 2004/05 season for a change within the league and joined the Hannover Scorpions for the new season .

With the Lower Saxony, Sascha Goc reached the play-off semi-finals in his first year, after the club were successful in the quarter-finals with 4: 3 games against ERC Ingolstadt , but finally lost to the Eisbären Berlin with 0: 3 defeats. In 60 games for the Scorpions, the defender was able to achieve 36 points, which was his best record to date in the top German division. In 2007 the right-shooter was called up by the fans for the DEL All-Star Game in Dresden . Since the 2008/09 season , Sascha Goc has held the DEL record for the most goals scored by a defender in one season with 24 goals in the main round and four goals in the play-offs. In total, he scored 40 points in the main round and another 14 points in the play-offs this season. In the following season Sascha Goc was able to record 17 goals and 41 points in the main round. He again scored the most goals and this time the most points of a defender in the regular season. With this point yield, the defensive player made a major contribution to winning the championship through the Hannover Scorpions. In the 2010/11 season , Sascha Goc could build on his performance from the previous season and with 23 goals and 51 points again scored the most goals and points for a defender in the main round. This was the best result of his career in the DEL. Due to his playful achievements and his personal commitment, he has been the captain of the Hannover Scorpions since the 2011/12 season . On November 25, 2012, Sascha Goc scored his 150th DEL goal, which was also the winning goal in the game against the Augsburg Panthers . The defender had a contract in Hanover until 2013.

Between 2013 and 2017 Goc played again for the Wild Wings in the DEL and was the team's captain.

International

In addition to his successful career at club level, Sascha Goc was a member of the German national team several times . After going through all the junior national teams, the defender took part in a senior world championship for the first time in 1998 , but was relegated to the B-World Cup with Team Germany. Due to his various career stations in North America, Goc was often prevented in the following years and only belonged to the German squad again for the 2003 World Cup . In Finland he reached the quarter-finals with his team, where they lost 3-2 after extra time to Canada .

This was followed by two further participation in world championships in 2004 and 2006 , until the defender crowned his international career by participating in the Winter Olympics in Turin . In the summer of 2008, Goc ended his career in the national team as a protest against the public warning by the National Anti-Doping Agency for violating the registration requirements.
