content

Don't Speak is a rock ballad about the pain of separation at the end of a love affair. In it, the lyrical self looks back in mourning at the past relationship and says that it doesn't even want to know the reasons for the separation because it hurts too much. According to singer and songwriter Gwen Stefani , the song is about the end of her relationship with band member Tony Kanal, who split from her in 1994 after seven years.

“You and me, we used to be together
Every day together, always
I really feel that I'm losin 'my best friend
I can't believe this could be the end
[…]
Don't speak, I know just what you 're sayin'
So please stop explainin '
Don't tell me' cause it hurts ”

At the beginning, band member Tony Kanal picks a maggot-infested orange from a tree. Much of the video shows the band playing the song on a stage at Mack Sennett Studios in Silver Lake with no audience. There are also performance scenes with an audience. Other scenes deal with a photo shoot of the group in which Gwen Stefani is the focus, while the other three band members are only marginal figures. At the end of the video, the opening scene is played backwards and Tony Kanal hangs the orange back on the tree.

At the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards , the video won the Best Group Video category .
