Tragic Kingdom is the third studio album of the US - ska group No Doubt . It was released in October 1995 by Trauma Records / Interscope . The album reached number one on the Billboard 200 , number two in Germany and number 22 on the Billboard decade charts of the 1990s. Seven singles were released between 1995 and 1998, including Just a Girl and Don't Speak . Both pieces reached high chart positions, the ballad Don't Speak made it to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 .

Origin and style

The album was recorded from 1993 to 1995 in eleven studios in the Los Angeles area . Matthew Wilder was responsible for the production . The album was mixed by Paul Palmer. Wilder made the production accessible, emphasizing the no-doubts from post-grunge and new wave as well as the third wave of ska . Besides the usual instruments on several songs wind -Passagen used.

Originally, the Interscope label had rejected much of the material from Tragic Kingdom due to the poor success of the debut album . The band had therefore recorded their next album The Beacon Street Collection single-handedly. While recording for Tragic Kingdom , the band met Paul Palmer, who had worked for Bush . He mixed Just a Girl and then the rest of the album and signed the band for his label, Trauma Records. Since The Beacon Street Collection had meanwhile sold 100,000 copies despite limited availability, Interscope's interest was rekindled and the label finally released Tragic Kingdom .

reception

The album was nominated for Best New Artist and Best Rock Album at the 1997 Grammy Awards . It has sold at least 15 million copies and received diamond status from the RIAA in the US and Canada , triple platinum in Australia and platinum in the UK . Rolling Stone magazine named it 441st in their list of the 500 best albums.
