Return of Saturn is the fourth album from the US - ska group No Doubt , released in April 2000th

History of origin

In contrast to the last album Tragic Kingdom , the music is much darker and relies more on lyrical lyrics. The music is influenced by The Cure . In addition, the album has a dominant New Age style. About half of the album deals with the separation between band bassist Tony Kanal and singer Gwen Stefani as well as their new relationship with the British singer Gavin Rossdale from the band Bush .

The creation process began in 1997 in a rented house in Hollywood Hills . Tony Kanal wrote the first songs there. The work on the album turned out to be very time-consuming and without any real concept. It took Gwen Stefani a long time to recover from the rigors of her career and was initially unsure how to proceed. The band finally decided not to repeat the musical style of its predecessor, but instead to experiment more. Initially, Matthew Wilder, who also produced the previous album Tragic Kingdom , was to be the producer and the first work on the album began with him in a studio in Los Angeles. After the work dragged on, Michael Beinhorn took over the production. He also got problems with his schedule. He then replaced Glen Ballard, who also completed work on the album. Ballard was hired by the group's manager to speed up work and ensure that it was a "radio hit" among the songs. In 1999 there was a first sign of life for the group, the song New was used for the soundtrack of the film Go . Work on the album was also finished in July, but after two weeks the band returned to the studio to record Ex-Girlfriend and Simple Kind of Life .

The name of the album refers to the 30-year period in which Saturn orbits the sun. This is known as the Saturn Return in the US . The title name serves as an allusion to Gwen Stefani's 30th birthday. First the album should be called "Magic's in the Makeup", then the name was changed to "Saturn Returns".

success

The album sold relatively well, reaching # 2 on the Billboard charts. The first single Ex-Girlfriend flopped and missed the Billboard Hot 100 . The other singles Bathwater and New also achieved only moderate success. The remix (by the Invincible Overlord ) of the single Bathwater , which was in the UK charts on the Top 20s , was released four years ago . Although the album reached # 5 in the German album charts, none of the singles reached a higher position than # 34 ( Ex-Girlfriend ).

The album received a nomination for best rock album at the 2001 Grammy Awards . The album went platinum in the US .
