Reyhan Şahin (* 1980 in Bremen ), stage names Lady Bitch Ray and Dr. Bitch Ray is a German rapper , linguist , author and radio presenter .

Life

Reyhan Şahin's parents are Alevis and come from Sivas, Turkey . Before Reyhan was born, her parents immigrated to Germany and she grew up in Bremen's working-class district of Gröpelingen . Her father is a Dede and when he arrived in 1972 he worked as a welder in a local shipyard . Şahin began rapping at the age of twelve. She completed her school career with a high school diploma .

Studies and PhD

Şahin studied linguistics and German at the University of Bremen and graduated in 2005 with a master's degree in linguistics. Her master’s thesis on the topic of “youth language based on the representation of youth culture hip-hop ” was published in an anthology published by the director of the institute in Brockmeyer-Universitätsverlag.

She then did her doctorate in 2012 with a dissertation on “The Importance of the Muslim Headscarf in Germany” and during this time she was a lecturer at the University of Bremen in the 2007/2008 winter semester, teaching the course “Introduction to Clothing Semiotics”. For her dissertation, she received a second prize at the 2013 German Study Prize in the humanities and cultural studies subject group. Your doctoral supervisor was Wolfgang Wildgen . From June 2012, Şahin was a member of the Research Center for Media and Communication, and in this context, until December 2013, a post-doctoral scholarship holder of the University of Hamburg's young talent initiative .

Media career

Şahin worked four years for the public radio program Funkhaus Europa as a freelancer and presenter. In May 2006, she was dismissed from Radio Bremen , which produces together with the WDR Funkhaus Europa, because her rap lyrics would convey “pornographic content”. A song called Hengzt Arzt Orgi , which is about a fictional sex orgy with the rappers King Orgasmus One , Bass Sultan Hengzt and Frauenarzt , was posted by Şahin for free. After the radio station found out, the presenter was given the choice of either taking the song off the Internet or leaving the station. This fact was popularized among other things by the picture . In contrast, the New York Post and The Sun reported that the collaboration had been terminated because of their clothing style being too tight. According to the Hindustan Times and Spiegel Online , Şahin took legal action against the separation from Radio Bremen. In May 2008 the Bremen Regional Labor Court , chaired by Judge Waldemar Reinfelder, decided in favor of Radio Bremen.

As a result, Şahin published the title Ich hasse dich ( I hate you) , in which she made insulting comments about the pop stars Jeanette Biedermann and Sarah Connor and the music producer Melbeatz . In her third rap publication, I kick your ass, she insults the Berlin rapper Kool Savas . The rapper used the beat of Savas' single Komm mit mir , which had been released some time earlier, for the song . The hip-hop magazine Juice reported on Lady Ray in 2006 and published the song Deutsche Schwänze on a Juice CD . Şahin initially marketed its products mainly on the Internet. In 2006, she moderated the pay-per-view - talk show Big fish, small fish , in which she guests such as B-Tight , Henning Wehland or Jan Delay interviewed. On March 8, 2007, Lady Bitch Ray founded her own label Vagina Style Records . The first releases, which were only distributed on the Internet, were the EP Curtain up on March 30th and the single Mein Weg on December 7th, 2007 . Her website on MySpace had 3.7 million views as of April 2010.

Şahin first became known to a broad German public at the end of 2007 through an appearance at Menschen bei Maischberger . As Lady Bitch Ray, Şahin was a guest in an edition of the Austrian late night show Willkommen Österreich that was broadcast on January 10, 2008 . She poured a glass of water over Ulf Poschardt , who was also invited and who had previously expressed criticism of her. Poschardt then left the show prematurely. At the time of the election campaign for the state elections in Hesse , Şahin wrote a contribution to the Spiegel Online website on the controversy over juvenile delinquency that had been initiated by Prime Minister Roland Koch in January 2008 . The text, however, dealt largely not with youth violence, but with the controversy surrounding her person and dubbed Şahin's critics as "garden Nazis".

As an actress, Şahin made her debut in the German movie Chiko in 2008 , in which she plays a prostitute. The film premiered in the Panorama section at the 2008 Berlinale . On April 24, 2008 she advertised the film in the entertainment show Schmidt & Pocher . After the first broadcast of the edition, the MDR and the BR waived the usual repetitions of the program. Spiegel Online suspected the reason for this removal from the artist's scandalous choice of language and subject: Şahin gave Pocher a can on the show that allegedly contained her vaginal secretions . The show then came under fire and ended after the end of the year. In June 2008, Şahin made a guest appearance on the 7th episode of MySpaces internet soap opera Candy Girls ; with reference to the protection of minors , parts of Şahin's verbal contributions were initially hidden, later the entire episode was removed from the offer.

In May 2009, her agency announced that Şahin would take a career break due to health problems. The reason was a collapse in the Bremen University Library on August 18, 2008. In an interview with the daily newspaper Die Welt in September 2012, Reyhan Şahin announced that she was suffering from severe depression .

Şahin took in the summer of 2014 at the Sat.1 telecast Hell's Kitchen and won it well. In 2015 she visited Newtopia .

In 2019 her well-received book Yalla, Feminismus was published .

reception

Şahin is received differently in the mass media : the Turkish Daily News characterizes her as “controversial”, Bettina Lehnert says on the online portal of Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg that she “provokes” with “pornographic” texts. Ursula Moreno suspects in the Spanish El Mundo that she made a name for herself primarily through profanity . According to Süddeutscher Zeitung , the guest book entries on their website range from “You are a shame for every Turkish woman” to “She is fully powerful, sexy, I'm scared of her. Respect!!"

The Bremen city magazine citybeat attests to her that she is a woman who "suffers from a penetrating urge to present herself and [...] desperately wants to make a career, regardless of the price." The Hamburger Abendblatt criticized her Internet program as "tasteless", and the taz objected that their "coarse, revealing demeanor [...] hardly sparked discussions about integration ", but rather "rather about emancipation and taste". The online magazine Europolitan even denies her any female emancipation effects.

In mid-2008, Şahin's accusation that Charlotte Roche had plagiarized Şahin's literary style in her debut novella Wetlands was prominently discussed in the German print media .

According to the rapper, her taboo-breaking texts are about Turkish-female emancipation; Şahin sees himself as an alternative to male-chauvinist rappers like Sido or Bushido . She expressed her displeasure with the way German-Turkish women are seen in Germany in an interview with the taz . Sonja Pohlmann and Caroline Fetscher from Tagesspiegel agree with her insofar as they see Lady Bitch Ray as a representative of the "alpha girls", a new generation of hedonistic feminists . The sociologist Paula-Irene Villa sees her as a “successful example of the empowerment of women”.

Şahin's appearance at Menschen bei Maischberger met with particularly wide media coverage. In the course of the program, Şahin explained that she propagated the emancipation of women and a "vaginal self-determination" in her songs and that her self-deprecating designation as a bitch saw progress in terms of emancipation. Spiegel editor Christian Buß saw her appearance as justification for Şahin's emancipatory criticism of her male rap colleagues. Peer Schader from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , on the other hand, described Şahin in the features section as a “poor provocation sausage in a golden glitter intestine” with “poisonous narrow-mindedness”. The Tagesspiegel , which praised her music as “professional”, stated that she was not interested in demonstrating the mechanisms of provocation and marketing - she was using it openly. Your strategy of attracting attention is therefore paying off. The member of the Bundestag Markus Löning stated a "scandal" about the low level of the program in his opinion.

Reviews of Şahin's musical works are rare. Alexander Rudolph complains in the Tages-Anzeiger that Şahin's academic career means that her appearance as a gangsta rapper is inauthentic .

In 2008 the rapper Schwartz released an album called Lady Bitch Gay , which contains several disstracks against Şahin.
