Newtopia (pronunciation: [ nuˈtoːpi̯a ]) is a German reality TV show that was initially developed by television producer John de Mol for Dutch television under the title Utopia . The German version was produced from February to July 2015 by the television production company Talpa Germany and broadcast by the German television station Sat.1 .

A group of 15 participants lived on a secluded piece of land near the Brandenburg town of Zeesen in order to develop their own and new form of society. The area was equipped with cameras so that the participants could be constantly observed by the spectators.

concept

A group of 15 people is abandoned for a year in a demarcated area. On this site there is an empty hall with gas and water connections, a stable with two cows and 25 chickens, a lake with a few fish and fertile farmland. The participants, called “pioneers”, will receive EUR 5,000 as joint start-up capital and a one-time mobile phone with EUR 25 calling credit. Participants have to start a new company. It is up to them, according to which laws and rules they want to build their so-called utopia and which goals they set themselves. The Newtopia inhabitants have to support themselves, among other things they can trade with the outside world. Visitors are allowed to enter Newtopia, but the pioneers are not allowed to leave it.

A resident has to go every month. The residents themselves nominate three residents. After the nomination, two new participants will be added. One will leave Newtopia again; the other decides which of the three nominated residents must leave Newtopia.

Idol

The concept of the television show was originally conceived and developed by the Dutch television producer John de Mol for the private broadcaster SBS 6 . The show has been running there since the beginning of 2014 under the title Utopia . The first episode of the Dutch predecessor reached over 1.6 million viewers on January 6, 2014, more than five times the usual number that the channel SBS 6 usually reaches.

Naming

The title of the concept and its modifications is borrowed from the novel Utopia , written by Thomas More in 1516. It is about an ideal society with democratic principles, based on rational principles of equality, diligence and the pursuit of education. The novel coined the term utopia .

The German version, like the Dutch model, was initially to be broadcast under the title Utopia . However, the Internet portal Utopia.de obtained an injunction against the company ProSiebenSat.1 Digital & Adjacent GmbH , as the Internet portal feared for its credibility. The ProSiebenSat.1 Digital & Adjacent GmbH is responsible for interactive products around the brands Sat.1, including the Internet portal for the show. The Hamburg district court prohibited the company from "using the Utopia brand as a trademark to evaluate the planned format on an Internet platform".

In November 2014, Sat.1 announced the renaming of Utopia to Newtopia in order to avoid legal problems. "Newtopia" is a suitcase word consisting of "Utopia" and "new" (English for "new").

Production and broadcast

In Germany, ProSiebenSat.1 Media and the television station Sat.1 secured the rights to the show. Initially, the show was to be broadcast in Germany from autumn 2014, but later Sat.1 named spring 2015 as the start date. On February 23, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. the TV show started on Sat.1. The 15 participants had already moved in on February 17, 2015. The episodes were first broadcast on weekdays at 7 p.m. From March 14th to May 30th, 2015, the episodes of the week were repeated in the morning program on Saturdays.

According to its own information, there were more than 8,000 applicants.

Production site

The television format was produced on part of the site of the former Zeesen broadcaster in the Zeesen district of the Brandenburg town of Königs Wusterhausen . It is 2 hectares in size and had 105 cameras, 57 microphones and 80 km of cables installed. A 450 m 2 barn was built for the participants in the format, who were referred to as pioneers . A 90 m 2 stable was built to house the animals . In addition, a 300 m 2 pond, a 3,000 m 2 pasture and a 1,200 m 2 garden area were created. In addition to the fenced-in area for the pioneers, a container village of 138 containers was built for production with around 100 employees.

Influencing the participants from outside

During the night from April 12 to April 13, 2015, the live stream viewers were able to follow a conversation with Talpa Executive Producer Jacqueline Boßdorf and the show's candidates. Previously, four of the candidates had stayed for more than an hour in the technical room, which was not covered by cameras and microphones. The other candidates noticed this and overheard the conversation. Afterwards, an angry discussion flared up among the participants. The live stream was interrupted several times. Covert external influence via selected participants, i.e. scripted reality , would not correspond to the propagated concept of the program and damage the trust of some candidates in the program. Apparently drunk, Bossdorf tried to de-escalate the mood among the participants. She complained about the pressure from viewers, the broadcaster Sat.1 and John de Mol . This demand a direct influence on the shipment process. The candidates should e.g. B. open a restaurant for dramaturgical reasons and sell the cows for this purpose. However, this form of interference contradicts the basic concept of the program propagated by the broadcaster. Talpa itself also admits to exert influence in a statement. The audience reacted mostly angry. The media magazine DWDL.de wrote that the format was "Scripted Entertainment" and the industry service Meedia stated "systematic fraud against viewers". The audience would be lied to and fooled. Sat.1 apologized on Facebook, but only for the fact that this conversation was made public, but not for the interference.

The episode broadcast after the incident barely exceeded the previous day's quota, despite the widespread media coverage of the controversy. After Sat.1 and Talpa Germany described the incident as a human error by a single person, Boßdorf was released from their duties.

Brief interruption

From Tuesday evening from April 28, 2015 to April 29, 2015, production was stopped for technical reasons. Contrary to the actual agreements and rules of the show, the 15 current participants had refused the week before to nominate a participant for elimination. Even after clear instructions from the production company Talpa, the candidate Peyman abstained. The nomination was carried out by the others. Then the live stream was switched off. A mass extract was then made.

The End

According to a press release on July 20, Sat.1 ended the broadcast of the format on July 24.

Attendees

The 15 participants, who are referred to as pioneers in the program, moved into Newtopia on February 17, 2015.

Guests

Prominent guests were Lady Bitch Ray , Kathy Kelly , Melanie Müller and Rainer Langhans .

reception

criticism

Oddsmeter.de complained about the first episode that the participants were mostly shown at home and little in Newtopia. Nevertheless, the first episode was promising and "left [...] room for narrative possibilities in many directions". Furthermore, the good preparatory work in production was praised. Wishlist.de wrote that the makers had "courage and [...] obvious enthusiasm"; "Potential [is] there" and "now [...] only needs to be used properly".

Focus Online wrote that Newtopia “has little to do with good entertainment” and Spiegel Online even described the participants as “soft in the pear”. The advertising concept with which the broadcaster grants companies advertising time within the program was also criticized . It is also not true that the participants would build a completely new society: In Newtopia, which is filmed on a mud field in Brandenburg, the entirety of all German laws applies . In the USA, the one-year program was canceled after eight weeks due to insufficient ratings. In view of these overall circumstances, the Focus is already thinking after the first episode where the program could be used after its removal from television: on the Internet - or it could be discontinued entirely.

When, after almost 100 episodes, and thus much earlier than originally planned by the broadcaster, the broadcast was announced, Der Spiegel stated that the broadcast had been “infinitely helpless”. If the broadcast were a mission to Mars, "it is to be feared that they [the Mars emigrants] will spend their lives in barren wasteland, pulling each other's teeth aching, and nobody is watching." The FAZ described Newtopia as "unsuccessful" and was even surprised that the TV experiment lasted for months despite poor ratings. The Süddeutsche Zeitung also considers the program - not only in view of the steadily decreasing audience share - to be "failed"; the alleged "reality TV revolution was not at all".

Audience ratings

In the total audience, the first episode started on February 23, 2015 with 2.80 million viewers, which corresponds to a 10.0 percent market share, and in the target group of 14 to 49 year olds with 1.61 million viewers, which is 17.0 percent market share corresponds. This was the highest audience rating the evening before Sat.1 since November 2009.

After the program has started, the audience ratings tend to fall. Nevertheless, the audience rating of Sat.1 at 7 p.m. increased by around a third. In the months prior to the reality show, old episodes of Navy CIS were broadcast on this slot and an average of six and a half percent was measured among 14 to 49 year olds.

International versions

Because of its great success in the Netherlands, the show is sold internationally. To date, four other national versions have been broadcast. Further national versions have been planned in Canada and Romania.
