Utopia.de is a German-language online platform on the subject of sustainability . It is an online magazine with an associated online community . Utopia.de is currently (July 2020) among the 300 to 800 most frequently visited websites in Germany.

Content

The online platform primarily publishes news and advice articles on the topics of sustainability and sustainable consumption . The focus is on the areas of climate protection and change, organic food , ethical fashion and natural cosmetics , but also on the traffic transition , green electricity and green IT .

Foundation and development

Utopia.de was founded in 2007 by the entrepreneur Claudia Langer, celebrities such as Sandra Maischberger , Axel Milberg , Hannes Jaenicke or the band Revolverheld supported the launch of the platform. In 2009, 2010 and 2012 Utopia hosted several conferences on social change to which scientists and politicians were invited. In 2014 utopia.de obtained an injunction against the company ProSiebenSat.1 Digital & Adjacent GmbH , which had planned to use the name "Utopia" for a television show. The planned program was finally broadcast under the title Newtopia . In 2014, DDVG , the media holding of the SPD , with a majority stake, joined Utopia GmbH as an investor, and has been the sole owner since 2015. A separate podcast has existed since April 2020 , with a new episode broadcast every week. Utopia.de had an average of 23 employees in 2018.

Reach and other metrics

According to the information community for determining the spread of advertising media, the website recorded over 3.3 million online visits in December 2017 ; according to its own information, this number had more than quadrupled to 14.5 million visits per month in June 2020. The Utopia website also has a community with 90,000 registered users, of which around 1,800 are active on the site. The site reaches several million users a month via social media . The platform generated losses in the past, but has been profitable since 2018, according to management.

Products

At the end of 2019, Oekom-Verlag published the book "Meine Reise nach Utopia", which takes up much of the content of the website. Utopia also sells its own posters on seasonal nutrition and avoiding food waste .

Consumer studies

In 2017 and most recently in March 2020, Utopia published larger consumer studies on sustainability, consumption and social change. According to Utopia, over 14,000 participants were surveyed for the study, which was published in 2020. The more recent study also tried to identify trends in the field of sustainable consumption, for example: "The move away from meat is irreversible", "Packaging remains a core topic" , " Sufficiency is becoming a trend topic" or "The young will shape sustainable consumption of the future" .
