Handelshof (Gera)
Handelshof is the historical name for the oldest skyscraper in the city of Gera in Thuringia ; today the seat of the Sparkasse Gera-Greiz . The listed building complex consists of the high-rise tower at Schloßstraße 11, a five-story side wing on Schloßstraße and a four-story side wing on Dr.-Eckener-Straße.
history
After the premises of the Geraer Sparkasse in the New Town Hall on Kornmarkt had become too small, the city bought two properties on Schloßstraße in 1926. Hans Brandt from Berlin emerged as the winner in the architecture competition announced in 1927 . The skyscraper was built in just 14 months from the laying of the foundation stone on August 29, 1928 to the handover on October 11, 1929. It housed the city savings bank and bank with a commercial department and shops. As early as 1930, the first renovation work was carried out on the staircase and the shops. In 1965 the elevator system was renewed and in 1970 the counter hall was rebuilt. From 1980 to 1984 the facade was redesigned, which simplified the historical window layout. The last general renovation took place from 1994 to 1998 under the leadership of the Nuremberg architects Baum-Kappler. An attempt was made to restore the historical external appearance of the building, among other things, the lettering "Sparkasse" was attached to the corners of the roofs based on the historical model.
There is a clock tower on the north and east side of the facade; the clockwork was renewed in 1993. Instead of the balconies originally on the north side, there is now a steel spiral staircase as an escape staircase . The side wing on Schloßstraße originally housed a café with a roof terrace on the top floor; the area was built over after 1945.
