Jochen Senf (born January 6, 1942 in Frankfurt am Main ; † March 18, 2018 in Berlin ) was a German actor and author .

Life

Senf was the son of the university professor and later finance minister of the Saarland, Paul Senf . Born in Frankfurt am Main, his family moved with him to Saarbrücken in 1952, where his father took up a professorship at Saarland University . Jochen Senf completed his Abitur at the Salem boarding school . After studying German and Romance languages , Senf attended the drama school in Saarbrücken . From 1969 to 1978 he was an audio dramaturge at Saarländischer Rundfunk . He made a name for himself in the independent cultural scene as a co-founder of the children's and youth theater Überzwerg . The ensemble consisting of Ingrid Braun, Alice Hoffmann , Ingrid Hessedenz, Peter Tiefenbrunner and Jochen Senf existed between 1978 and 1985. The first production - performed on April 20, 1979 in the Försterstrasse youth center in Saarbrücken - was an adaptation of the popular educational play for children and young people What does love mean here? of the Berlin children's and youth theater Rote Grütze .

From 1988 onwards, Senf played the Saarbrücken crime scene commissioner Max Palu . The last of his Saarbrücken crime scenes was shown on November 13, 2005 in Das Erste . The series’s unique selling points were autobiographical elements (such as the use of a bicycle as a means of transport and the commissioner's preference for good food) as well as topics that dealt with grievances against a regional background, such as trafficking in girls and prostitution in the German- Luxembourg border area ( Salü Palu , 1988) , the situation of exiles from South American military dictatorships ( winter chess , 1988), nuclear power ( Kesseltreiben , 1993) or criminal machinations in professional ice hockey ( penalty , 1999). Nina Hoger (as Max Palu's girlfriend), Tilo Prückner , Tayfun Bademsoy , the well-known actor Kurt Wagner from the Heimat film series and Alice Hoffmann had multiple or regular appearances in the Palu series . In eight of the 18 Palu- crime scenes led Hans-Christoph Blumenberg Director. Peter Zingler and Felix Huby , among others, acted as scriptwriters ; Jochen Senf wrote the script himself for three films in the series. In addition to the 18 official films in the Palu series, there are two more appearances in Tatort films: Jochen Senf played a supporting role in an early SR Tatort film ( Who else digs a pit… , 1977). In his role as Max Palu, he made a guest appearance in 1991 in the last Schimanski-Tatort ( The Schimanski case ).

Both during and after his time as Tatort commissioner, he was seen in various TV and film productions - for example in 1988 in a supporting role as a small star in the Luxembourg neo-noir film Troublemaker by Andy Bausch and in the black comedy of the Wende Struppi and the Wolf (1991). He played other supporting roles in 2009 as Ludwig Erhard in Thomas Schadt's Kohl biography Der Mann aus der Pfalz and in 2012 in the Kai Wessel crime thriller Mord in Ludwigslust . As a theater actor, he played roles on various stages - in his last years in the comedy on Berlin's Kurfürstendamm.

In addition to his engagements as a stage and film actor, Senf wrote radio plays , screenplays , crime novels and children's books . His crime novels - for example Kindswut from 2010 - often dealt with the abysses behind the facade of a decent bourgeois existence. Senf also got involved with Terre des Femmes as patron of a campaign against domestic violence against women. He also addressed the fact that this phenomenon occurs in all social groups and used his own experience. In the autobiographical sketch Von Mann zu Mann , he described the violent, choleric outbursts of anger of his father Paul Senf (1915–1998) and how his family and those around him dealt with it. The respected economist and university professor was Minister of Finance in Saarland in 1954/55 and 1963–1965.

Jochen Senf has lived in Berlin since 1988. The change of residence coincided with the relationship with the artist Margret Lafontaine, with whom he was in a relationship for a number of years. In May 2016, mustard was moved to a nursing home after a hospital stay of several weeks; it was reported that his health was poor. On the night of March 18, 2018, he died in a Berlin nursing home.

Jochen Senf has two brothers: Gerhard Senf, a psychologist in Saarbrücken, and Wolfgang Georg Senf, professor of psychosomatics in Essen.

Media coverage

The role of Tatort commissioner Max Palu not only brought Jochen Senf the breakthrough as a nationally known actor. The role - so the summary of many media - was tailored to him in such a way that many people automatically associated the figure of Max Palu with the keywords "Saarbrücken" and "Tatort". According to Barbara Grech in an obituary on tagesschau.de , opinions have been divided to this day. Some would find this Palu too clichéd and sedate. Others wept after the Palu crime scenes to this day. The Süddeutsche Zeitung already described similarities between the Tatort role and the actor at an earlier point in time . Just like Palu, Jochen Senf is "honest in a sometimes not necessarily diplomatic way, but reliable, committed and friendly."
