biography

Ilse Storb studied school music, Romance studies, musicology and jazz education in Cologne, Paris ( Sorbonne ) and Boston ( Berklee College of Music ).

Storb did her doctorate on Claude Debussy and wrote her habilitation on Dave Brubeck . In 1971, on her initiative, in close cooperation with Joe Viera, the jazz laboratory was founded at the University of Education in Duisburg, now the University of Duisburg-Essen . Well-known jazz teachers and musicians such as Theo Jörgensmann , Monika Linges and Helen Sachs worked in the jazz laboratory . This course broke new ground in the field of school music education. In 1989 she produced the LP Interaction with the numerous groups in the jazz laboratory and organized three congresses devoted to jazz education and improvised music. The Duisburg Jazz Laboratory is also regarded as a forerunner of later training courses for jazz at the music academies.

In 1982 she was appointed professor for systematic musicology including jazz research at the University of Duisburg. Despite Storb's intensive cooperation efforts to combine jazz artistic training at the Folkwang University in Essen with jazz pedagogical and jazz scientific courses at the Mercator University in Duisburg, the jazz laboratory was liquidated in the early 1990s. The Folkwang management wanted to move all positions over to Essen.

She is also active as a musician and appears nationwide with her various concert programs. In 1989 she founded the Uni Duisburg Big Band , and in 1991 the band Ilse and her Satchmos . In 1994 she tours to Nigeria and Brazil, in 1999 to Japan and China and since 1971 around 30 research trips to sub-Saharan Africa. In 1996 Storb reanimated the Tabarka Jazz Festival (Tunisia). Storb took 20 further research trips to the USA, where she gave lectures at the International Association of Jazz Education and received several awards.

In 1998 Storb received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for intercultural mediation, her commitment to world music and her worldwide peace work .

Ilse Storb is the patron of the non-profit association Karuna Germany, which is committed to aid projects in India and Nepal, in particular to the equality of women and children.

Since her retirement , Storb has been particularly committed to the “Laboratory for World Music” that she set up in collaboration with the Folkwang Music School of the city of Essen, which is unique in its function in the Ruhr area. She maintains close contacts with musicians and scientists from all continents, especially in Africa.

Ilse Storb is also still a regular guest on various TV programs (such as DAS ! , People of the Week , Kölner Treff , People at Maischberger , The Perfect Celebrity Dinner and TV total ). In November 2014, the 85-year-old gave a one-hour autobiographical long interview on Deutschlandradio Kultur.
