Helen Sachs

Helen Sachs (born December 17, 1934 in Indonesia ) is a Dutch jazz singer.

Life

Sachs had classical piano lessons when he was six. During her school days she performed as a vocalist with her own jazz trio. Her role models were the jazz singers of the 1940s such as Billie Holiday , Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan , but also Frank Sinatra and Mel Tormé . In 1957 she moved to Germany, from 1969 she began to perform with smaller combos and big bands. She also worked with various radio and television stations in Europe, u. a. with TROS and VARA in the Netherlands, Südwestfunk and Süddeutscher Rundfunk and TV Bratislava. Recordings were made a. with Mel Lewis and Jeff Hamilton ; she also appeared with Hank Jones , Art Farmer and Toots Thielemans . From 1973 to 1988 she taught at the University of Duisburg. In 1997 she moved to the United States. She is with the alto saxophonist Dr. James Helder married. Since then she has been working with her septet formation Crossings and the big band On The Rio Grande in Las Cruces , New Mexico . Since then she has performed frequently in Germany, including a. with her quintet, led together with Curt Warren, and the Ralf Butscher Trio.
