Opuntia chavena is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet chavena is the native name (Chaveño) for the plant in Mexico. Spanish common names are "Chaveño" and "Cascarón".
description
Opuntia chavena grows tree-shaped, has open branches and reaches heights of 2 to 3 meters. A clearly thorned trunk is formed. The yellowish green, broadly obovate shoot sections are 22 to 30 centimeters long. The round to elongated, black areoles on it are 2 to 3 centimeters apart. They get bigger with age. The lemon-yellow glochids of different lengths are up to 1 centimeter long. The five to 15 thorns , sometimes more, are initially white and have a translucent tip. In old age they gray or become blackish. The hard and stiff, protruding thorns are 1 to 3 centimeters long.
The flowers are yellow, the fruits red.
Distribution and systematics
Opuntia chavena is common in the Mexican states of Aguascalientes and Jalisco .
