UKW was a band from the Neue Deutsche Welle (NDW).

history

Peter Hubert studied double bass on the HDK in Berlin . He was first noticed musically in 1979 as a member of the band Mighty Little and the Earthshakers . At the end of 1979 he founded the band UKW with Andreas Schwarz-Ruszczynski and Andreas Koch. Bassists and drummers changed several times, it wasn't until February 1981 that the final line-up was found with Peer Gerlach and Thomas Schütze. In 1981 UKW and 9 other bands won the Berlin Senate Rock Competition among 280 young talent groups. As a prize, UKW was allowed to produce a single ( Stay with me ), which was released in December 1981. The single sold well and UKW began recording their first album in early 1982 after a record company was found with Teldec . The LP was called ultra short wave .

Freckles was released as the first single and was promptly a hit. Numerous television appearances followed (for example ZDF hit parade No. 1 in July 1982 and Bio's Bahnhof ), ZDF broadcast a live recording of FM as part of a Rockpop in Concert program. The follow-upsingle Ich will became a hit (in December 1982 number 2 in the ZDF hit parade), UKW advanced to one of the most popular bands of the Neue Deutsche Welle with the fans. UKW won the Golden NDW Special Otto 1982 of the BRAVO .

In early 1983 the band recorded their second album Alles Klar . It was much more complex to produce than ultra-short wave . The album was released in April 1983, before there was already a foretaste of the LP with Hey Matrosen (in the ZDF hit parade July 1983 at number 3). After the release of Alles Klar , the band went on a month-long tour of Germany. Peer Gerlach left UKW in the summer of 1983. A successor was found for him, but after an appearance at the Berlin radio exhibition in September 1983, FM announced their dissolution.

Peter Hubert aspired to a solo career and released a single ( now or never ). Andreas Schwarz-Ruszczynski had another hit with the band The Other Ones in 1987 ( Holiday ) and in 1989 worked as a studio musician for Alphaville on the album The Breathtaking Blue . Andreas Koch joined Kim Merz's band .

In the 1990s, Peter Hubert was the only ex-VHF member who was still heard from. On the one hand he kept and keeps the FM songs alive in the form of NDW revival concerts, on the other hand he works as a music publisher and supervised a. a. the title of the dance floor project SASH! , which was successful with around 12 million CD sales worldwide. Various FM tracks were re- released as techno versions in the 1990s . Peter Hubert released the EP so love under the stage name "Huppertz" in 1996 , the single Germany Allergy in 2004 and the single Du bist die Goldreserve in 2012 .

In 1996 an FM best-of CD was only released as a promotional CD for the media, although it may have a. two titles ( Do you think I am waiting and One step too many ) that were recorded by FM shortly before the dissolution and were previously unreleased . In the mid-2000s, both FM albums were released as double CD on DA music.
