Bruni comes from a very simple background. His father was a supporter of the labor movement, and the fight against fascism at the end of World War II was one of the experiences that shaped Bruni's political orientation.

From 1953 to 1959 he attended the Instituto d'Arte in Pesaro. After exhibitions in Pesaro and Florence, Bruni went to London in 1959, where he began to be interested in Pop Art. After an exhibition of his work in the Whibley Gallery in London, he came to the State University of Fine Arts in Hamburg in 1960 . Georg Gresko made it possible for him to study, which was certainly the decisive stage in his biography. Bruno Bruni said of his strict mentor and teacher in an interview in 1978: "Without Gresko, I would not be what I am today". Gresko helped Bruni to implement the tension between Italian artistic tradition on the one hand and surrealism and abstract expressionism on the other.

After Gresko's death (1962) he studied with Paul Wunderlich , who taught him the technique of polychrome lithography . Bruni left the college in 1965. In 1967 he was awarded the Lichtwark Prize of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. In 1968 he became a founding member of the CO-OP artist cooperative Hamburg . Since then he has worked in Hamburg in the formerly converted Thedebad and in Urbino . For some time he has been living and working in Hanover, where his wife runs a gallery.

In 2008 he took part in the cookery documentary The Perfect Celebrity Dinner for the TV station VOX .

He is the father of actor Bruno Bruni Jr. .
